Jimbo,

The information regarding air from a "hoseless" unit is transmitted from a sending unit mounted in one of the HP ports on your reg. From there it sends out radio waves to the receiving unit (mounted on your wrist)

Greg,

I am not a big fan of "hoseless" units, too many things happen to make them unreliable. IMHO stick with what you have either use the SPG and the Vyper or use the Cobra.
NOBODY has come up with a reliable and fool proof method of transmitting data from the sending unit to the receiving unit yet.

It works through the use of an electronic transmitter. The transmitter screws into the HP port on your 1st stage (where your HP hose normally goes) and it sends signals to the wrist mounted computer with all relevant info. The drawback is that sometimes you'll loose the signal momentarily. But, from what I have heard, that problem has all but been elimanated on most of today's hoseless air-intergrated computers. I know several divers that use Uwatec and Oceanic hoseless computers that say they never experience such a lose, and others say they do when doing things like flashing the strobe on their camera. But then it's only momentarily.

Hehe...That's why I didn't buy one to begin with, well that and the fact that they are extremely expensive. I almost bought the Oceanic Datatrans Plus but got talked out of it by the store owner. Imagine that, a store owner that talked me out of spending another $300. But even if I had of went that route, I'd kept an analog SPG just in case. :) But I'd still like to have the best of both worlds.

I started using one when they first came out, it was the Sherwood Escort back in 97 I think. Though others complained about minor problems from time to time, mine was always performing flawlessly. Later I tried and owned the Scan 5 which was esentially the same unit (made my Oceanic's company) In addition to what I've used, I've sold many to students while running a dive shop, and never had any complaints. My next one will most likely be the Aladin Air X Nitrox unit.

Sea you in the Deep Blue!

The Aladin is a nice unit. I've saw a couple of those in action and really liked them. But man they are very proud of them. And since you sometimes use a rebreather, it would be perfect for that as well. BTW, did you ever buy the rebreather?

No, unfortunately I haven't been able to splurge on it just yet. But some day grasshopper... some day.

Hey Mario...While we're on the Aladins...what do you think about the Air X Nitrox hoseless?

If you run a Cobra, can you also use a analog spg as a backup?

as long as you have 2 HP ports on your first stage. However, I don't and don't really see the need. I keep a close watch on my air and I pretty much know about how much air I have left at all times. So in the unlikely event the Cobra failed for some reason, I'd just end the dive and start (slowly) making my way to the surface. But if you were doing deco diving or diving in an overhead environment, then that's a different ballgame and full redundancy would be required.
