Hi everyone, I'm off to Micronesia shortly and my Suunto Stinger is running low on juice. I have no idea where to get the battery replaced. Does anyone have an idea?

John

According to the Suunto website, the Stinger's battery is not user-replaceable -- the translation is that, like the D9, it likely has to go back to Suunto / AquaLung for a battery swap.

I could be wrong, so you could try calling Maui Dreams, B&B or Pacific Dive. They're the shops that do most of the repair on island.

Beyond that, if you were willing to risk it to a jeweler, rather than an equipment service station, you could try Jere in the Rainbow Mall (below Cafe O'Lei and behind Da Kitchen). They've successfully changed the battery in my Momentum watch... and it hasn't flooded. :D

Kris is right, B & B had to send ours in to be replaced.

Thanks all, figured as much. I don't trust myself to replace the battery and will likely have Maui Dreams send it in. I think they're the only suunto dealer in Kihei.

It's really not that hard - depends if you're prepared to be without it

right -- be without it permanently when it floods. :)

According to the jeweler / watchsmith at Jere, there are some watches he won't touch (i.e. must be sent in), because they pressurize the inside of the watch in order to stay waterproof -- something he doesn't have the equipment to do.

He did look briefly at my D9 and said that wasn't something he'd be comfortable changing the battery in.

I love Maui Dreams, and I'm sure they'll take care of you -- I don't tend to send people anywhere else.

But in the interest of having a correct record, I'm pretty sure I've seen Suunto products at Maui Dive Shop, B&B, and Scuba Shack, too. :D

Well... it seems like the link I posted earlier said that someone had replaced their suunto stinger battery without any problems, and without any specialised equipment

I'm know that it's common to pressure test watches/dive computers after service, but I'm not personally aware of any that have pressurised cases

Then again, I'm not providing warranty coverage on changing the battery :)

I can understand that your average jeweler doesn't want to potentailly be responsible for ruining a $1000+ piece of equipment for the $30 you're going to pay him for changing the battery, but that doesn't mean it can't be done

I've had jewelers refuse to replace the battery in my TAG/Omega watches becasue they weren't comfortable doing it, and fair enough - but not because they have a pressurised battery compartment

So caveat emptor, but don't get sucked in either
