My understanding is that it is largely a Chinese practice although there is some consumption in Japan. Hopefully some of our members from there will chime in to give a factual assessment.

The number of sharks taken for shark fin soup is most likely in the tens of millions based on what I've read. Many more are killed in other targeted fisheries or as bycatch when fishing for other fish. Estimates that I have seen are as high as 100 million sharks killed per year (total).

It is so sad to think about that number. Trying to put 1 million into context, let alone 100 million. Makes you wonder if there will even be a planet for our kids, let alone their kids.

There are moments that I feel ashamed being a 'human' :shakehead:

I saw the documentary and I can tell you this: be prepared :crying2: .

(Over) fishing animals to eat them is one thing but this inhuman abuse of defenseless animals should be punished severely and by SEVERELY I mean going Middle Ages punishments on these heartless guys. If you see how emotionless those guys were cutting off fins.

A gross generality of some poor practices by western standards:

Japan == whale and dolphin hunting

Chinese == Shark Finning, Bear gall bladders, tiger and leopard parts.

Mexico == Turtle eggs

Iceland == Whaling

There are many more. The western world has their own as well - humanity in the livestock industry.

In Europe they are overfishing Tuna. Yellow fin tuna is almost endangered. Now the blue fin tuna is heavily fished on. Now the EU government has put an end on fishing on these tuna. BUT what happens is that illegal fishing happily continues. Fishing boats just use a non EU flag (American flag for example) and continue fishing.

I would suggest the government should prohibit also restaurants from buying these fish. Ridicilous restaurant owner on TV was acting bleeding nose telling 'I think these Tuna fish we bought come from the US' Yeah right.

Hate to sound stupid (again), but could someone explain what shark finning is?

Its a way to make a movie that you can spam scuba forums with pleas to buy it without it being regarded as spam.

The problem with finning isn't divers knowing about it. The problem is everyone else.

If the problem is that non scuba people don't know this perhaps it is a good thing to bring this to scuba people's attention. Perhaps by repeating this scuba people tell others...
