:06: I just returned from Bonaire on my last dive on Sat. after surfacing and waiting for other divers i jumped in the water to just float. after getting out and heading back to the shop my hands where stinging really bad and really itchy. the captain of the boat said that it was some kind of microorganism in the water that sometimes does that. Well, as soon as i got to the shop i put on some "stingaway" and eventually the stinging/itch went away. Well, the itch is bad and worse..does anyone know what it could be or what i can do to stop the itching. any help would be great.

I've always found the Benadryl Cream or spray works well, it has a analgesic effect as well as antihistamine. :)

A couple of us experienced the same thing about 4 months ago. I just had it on my hands....lucky....one of the ladies had it on her thighs !! Ouch.

Some people from the Bonaire Talk Board advised me to use Stridex pads.....and take them with me next time and clean
hands immediately after getting out. Im thinking surgical gloves with fingers cut out next time and just check reallllllll good for the scuba police before putting them on.....and looking around before I get out !! That stuff was a bear.

Those could be stungs from the planktons or very tiny jellyfish. I used to dive in shorts and would come out of the water with "rashes" all over my body, especially if I had to stay on the surface for a while. The doctor usually would give me some antihistamine and a betamethasone cream to stop the itch. The itch usually goes away in about 7 to 10 days, but would be very itchy when the weather gets hot.

It took about the 7 to 10....but those were 7 to 10 I dont want to do again !!!

I usually pack a bottle / jug of the aloe gel goop ... the kind WITH anesthetic or pain reliever listed, typically for sunburn relief. It's good for the minor stings from floating jellyfish.

NO-AD makes some locally, search for it near the suntan lotion.

Similarly, for the stray hand that hits fire coral, immediately after you get stung
find some sand and lightly rub the sting area with sand.
This should remove any leftover stinging cells.
It has helped me on those rare occasions I bump something whilst framing a macro shot.

Although I seriously doubt rolling in the surf sand would have the same effect for surface pest stings.

thanks guy's...at least I wasn't the only one. I feel a bit better to know that someone else out there had the same thing..not that it's a good thing. well, i guess i'll just wait the 10 or so day's to see if it goes away.
