Howdy all. I picked up a used steel tank (s72) from a local diver here through Craigslist that had been hyrdo'd back in 2010. I took it to my LDS to get an updated VIP, but was told there was rust on the inside and that it would have to be tumbled before the VIP could be done. So when I spoke back to the original seller (who was very fair by paying for the tumbling), he cautioned me that the right thing for the shop to do AFTER the tumbling was to require another hydro test.

As new as I am, I have no idea which is right, and I have not been able to locate anything in SB or "other forums"

So what do you think? Does a tumbling and rust treatment necessitate a hydro to be redone?

Thanks in advance!

Depending on how much rust the fact that it was just hydro'd I'd say no it does not need another hydro. Did they indicate how much if any pitting there was? Some rust after a hydro is normal in these parts as the hydro places don't always dry the tanks well. Tumbling or a turn with the whip is usually done. Will the shop still.fill the tank if you don't let them hydro it? If so tell em to slap a sticker on and fill it up.

No you do not need a new hydro after tumbling. If tumbling removed anywhere near the amount of steel that would even slightly compromise the structural integrity of a tank, they'd NEVER do it.

Who knows why there is so much mis-information and ignorance regarding the handling of scuba tanks.....it's just not that complicated.
