Found what looks to be a really great place to stay on Islamorada, but I had such a great experience last year with Silent World (thanks Pat!) in Key Largo that I would be willing to drive a bit to use their dive op again. I know what MapQuest tells me, but in reality how long is the drive? I think it is mile marker 82 to 102. Is this really do-able? Thanks!

Am I nuts?

Yes. There are excellent charters much closer and with them you'll be able to explore new and exciting dive sites you won't see from Key Largo.

Driving...no your not nuts. I drove down there from Miami the other day for lunch. BTW check out Lora Lei (spelling) around MM 85 on the gulf side. They have a big sign with a mermaid on it. Best conch fritters I've ever had...

That may be true, but I will be with a new diver- he did a couple "discover scuba" dives last year with Pat, and this year wants to do his checkout dives with her. We may not see any new sites, but I would prefer that he is calm, comfortable with his instructor, and has a good learning experience instead of checking out a different patch of reef. Another point too: after being stuck here in Iraq for a year (as we both have) we don't care where in Florida we go- we will just be happy to be with the fishies!!

Thank you for your input though :)

My wife and I have been staying in Islamorada and diving from Key Largo for several years. We don't consider the drive an issue at all. We like diving wrecks, and feel the better ones are closer to Key Largo. I'd rather drive the distance by car to do those wrecks than take a boat out of Islamorada and travel the same distance by water. Bottom line is that it depends on what you are looking for, site-wise and dive op-wise.
