If you are determined to stay in Playa part of your stay and dive Cozumel look into Tank Ha dive shop in Playa. They run a daily(if they have the divers) boat directly out of Playa to the Cozumel dive sites without having to do the ferry. I've never dove with them, so can't comment on the experience, but I did meet one of the owners as they were preparing to leave for Cozumel one morning on the beach in Playa. If I were trying to do what you are they would be the best choice logistcally. Waiting, dragging gear, Ferry rides and time consumed at both ends would be a long day. Why not just get on a dive boat and go straight to the reefs.

Good luck
Rich

Olga The last two trips I took to the area I flew into Cozumel stayed a week and then took the ferry to Playa for 4 days and then a shuttle or Bus to the Cancun Airport home. The air Fare was no more than Flying Round trip to either Cancun or Cozumel.
With our a doubt plan the larger amount of time diving in Cozumel because the dive sites are endless and the diving is far better than Playa. The Ferry over to Playa is a piece of cake and in Playa you can plan a bull shark dive and your Cenotes dives then take off for some sight seeing to the Mayan ruins. The Ferry ride in about 45 minutes so check your bag and pick it up when you get off the boat and I just walk to my hotel but 25 very aggressive cabbies will be there to take you to your hotel. Have fun you will love it im heading back for trip 12 in January.

See the bolded text yourself. If you have anything to add to the conversation feel free. Why do you think I put the phrase "if they have the divers" in there in the first place, as a warning.

People miss things so it was relevant to emphasis. Don't get upset.

Hi Olga,
I have been living in the area for the last couple of years, and this is what I suggest you do. Fly in to Cancun, get the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen, (which is right there in the airport terminal). It takes about 45-50 min and it costs ~$15 one way. You will not have to worry about your luggage, the driver will take care of it. :) I do it all the time!
Once in playa, you take a taxi to your hotel (~$5) and you are set for your vacation. Use this as your base, and make day trips from here.

You have Tulum, with beautiful beaches, town and ruins 1 hour away. You can get here by collectivo, which is an inexpensive and practical mode of public transportation along the coast from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. It picks you up on the highway and will drop you off where ever you will like along the highway.

Then you have Chichen Itza, 2.30 hrs away from Playa del Carmen, for this I would recommend for you to rent a car early in the morning drive to the pyramids and come back that same day. It is beautiful and totally worth it.

You can also take the ferry over to Cozumel for the day, enjoy the island and its beaches.

I can see you are really into diving, but do not worry, diving operators in Playa del Carmen will do dives in Cozumel. The beauty of being in land is that no matter how bad the weather is, you can always do cenote divings, which are completely beautiful and you will not be stuck in the hotel.

I really hope this helps!
Have a wonderful vacation!

It is a joke to be trying to dive Cozumel from a base in Playa. Decide what your priorities are then decide, just don't expect an exceptional reef dive vacation while staying on the mainland...it s just too much work. I say this while open to be seeming self serving... but I have seen it over and over again in the last 20 years. Lots of people start on the mainland then once they experience Cozumel... say why?

If your goal is magnificent underwater formations, plentiful protected fish life, then Cozumel is your choice. If you think you want to spend the rest of your life in some pretty barren cenotes, then just stay there and enjoy the pile of fairly recent rocks that Tuluum really is. But don't miss Chichen Itza.

PS Crossing the channel in a 300 ft ferry is frequently very rough. IN a small dive boat, enjoy! Then do you think the dive guides from the mainland really know the Cozumel reefs? I barely know them after 2000 dives.

I do not own a dive op on Cozumel (or any interest in any business, for that matter), but I'm 100% with Dave Dillehay on this one. If Diving is important to you, you really have to spend part of your vacation staying on Cozumel. Frankly, the diving off the mainland doesn't hold a candle to the diving on Cozumel, IMHO, and trying to dive the Cozumel reefs with a PDC dive op is tiring and uncomfortable at best (not to mention a lot more expensive - the Dive Op has to recover the extra cost of fuel to bring a bigger seaworthy boat across a 12-mile channel both ways). The Cenotes really hold no attraction for me - I dive primarily for the sea life and the incredible coral reef formations, and for that, spend at least 5 days on Cozumel. Yes, the Mayan Ruins on Cozumel are pretty disappointing compared to the Mainland. Tulum is great, and Chichen Itza is definitely worth a day trip. And if you want to try the diving off the mainland and do the Cenotes, then spending several days in Playa Del Carmen will work. But I think you'll really regret it if you don't see the Cozumel reefs from a base in Cozumel.

Thanks to you all! Let's suppose I do both, what's the most optimal way to arrange the visit? Here are the parameters. I'm planning to stay there for about 11 nights, say 5-6 nights on each side. I'd like to dive almost every day, maybe sometimes twice. Do multiple Cozumel wall dives, some night dives, Cenotes at least once or twice, but also visit Chitzen Itza, whatever other non-marine attractions that region has to offer, experience some local culture, some night life. Given my interest in diving, I'd probably want to spend most of my mornings in Coz.

One option seems to be to fly to Cancun (non-stop flight), get some kind of local transportation to Cozumel, stay there for 5-6 days, get the ferry back to Playa, maybe then rent a car to do sightseeing, and spend the remaining days diving Cenotes and/or taking morning ferry to Cancun, to do more wall diving. Does it work? Also, how much pain will it be with one big and one small person dragging 4 heavy suitcases + 2 carry-ons? Is there some way to get all the way end-to-end from the Cancun airport to Coz hotels via van, or some such, to minimize inconvenience?

Another option, I don't know if better, would be to rent a car in Cancun, and travel over the car ferry. If we're spending 5-6 days on Cancun, this seems reasonable. Or not? Is the car ferry still running? I think I've seem some post claiming it's not.

Yet another option would be to fly to Coz, then fly back out of Cancun... flight to Coz take a few hours longer from where I live, not sure if this is really better than taking the ferry.

Other options? What would you suggest? Does the possibility of el Nortes somehow factor into the answer? How many days of el Nortes should we expect at the end of December during this visit? Do the Coz operators offer diving Cenotes as a backup if the port is closed? Or if not, is there enough time in the morning to take the ferry and hook up with an operator on the other side?

Stay in Cozumel - dive in Cozumel.

You only need 1 day to dive cenotes unless you really love them, then do 2 days or 3 days or whatever. You only need 1 day to see Chitzen Itza, actually only 1/2 a day if you leave early and get there before the mass of tourist swarm the place and bog you down. (key is to rent a car so you can come and go as you like and not be stuck on some God forsaken tour bus that is going to burn your whole day up) You can easily do Chitzen Itza and another ruin like Ek Balam or Coba or something else in 1 day if you rent a car and leave early.

If if was me and knowing what I know (which you don't have the privilege yet, as you've not been there) I'd

Fly into Cozumel
Spend 7 days diving butt off in Cozumel.
Take the people ferry across to Playa Del Carmen, rent a car and head south to stay in Akumal. On this day I'd check into my place in Akumal, chill a bit, grab some lunch by the beach, then head to Tulum to see the ruins, the awesome beach below the ruins, then head a little bit further south and have some beach time and dinner at one of the beach/micro eco hotels

Next day I'd dive the cenotes (actually I'd skip them, I've done them, they just kind of suck in my opinion, but some people do like them)

Next day head to Chitzen Itza early, very early, do Chitzen Itza and another ruin, chill, dinner... next day fly out of Cancun.

It's not my cup of tea to stay in Playa only to dive across at Cozumel, that's just not a good use of your vacation in my opinion, way too much logistics for the effort and results that will be lacking compared to the ease of staying in Coz and rolling out of bed and rolling into the water so easily as you can when you stay there.

Akumal is way better to stay at than PDC in my opinion. is closer to the things you want to do anyways. Rental car on the main land gives you freedom and saves you tons of time and frustration. Devote 1 day of diving the cenotes and see if you really like them. If you really love it, you can come back another time and dive them more. Exploring Akumal and Tulum is way more interesting and will yield great memories for the effort than hanging around PDC, unless you want kitchy shoping and night life, crowds, tourists... See Akumal and Tulum now, in 10 years they are going to be just like PDC. The growth south of Cancun is like wildfire, see what you can and experience what you can now while you can..

An alternative is to do it in reverse, fly into Cancun, get a rental car, drive down south, do the cenotes and ruins, then return the car and head across to Coz for 7 days, fly out of Coz or take the ferry across and stay a day and night in PDC then leave out of Cancun
