Hi, I'm planning a dive trip to Cozumel around Christmas. I'm wondering whether to stay on Cozumel, or on Playa del Carmen. What do you recommend? As far as I can tell, the ferry doesn't carry cars, and traveling to/from the mainland by foot takes time and effort, so I can't plan on hopping back and forth. Or can I? Do operators on either side routinely cross the channel? Do Playa operators go to Cozumel, and do Coz operators go to Playa? What happens when the port on Coz closes due to weather, is it still possible to travel to Yukatan and go to Cenotes on the mainland, or will the ferry also be grounded? Is there anything to do on Coz during bad weather? Does it make sense to rent a car?

I would stay on Cozumel if the focus is diving. When we took the ferry last year, I had to leave our gear bag out on the bow of the ferry, it added another delay when we got to the dock. You can always take the ferry over to playa after diving if you want to spend money on 5th Ave in Playa. I find the ferry ride to be boring and the boats have a tendancy to porpose on the swells, a woman sitting near us got sea sick within minutes of leaving the terminal.

I have no idea why visitors rent cars on Cozumel, taxis are easy to catch and are reasonable and parking is a drag.

Are the best dive sites on Coz accessible by Playa dive operators? After a bit more research, I'm considering to fly to Cancun instead, and drive down to stay at a hotel in Playa. The flights to Cancun are twice shorter, and I'd like to also dive Cenotes and visit the Maya ruins... Am I going to miss all the good stuff by not staying in Cozumel? The channel looks only 12km across, I would imagine a cattle boat wouldn't have any problem getting across in 15 min., am I wrong? What am I going to miss?

Cozumel operators do not cross the channel to pick divers up to bring them back to Cozumel for diving - that would add significant time and fuel and pricing is based on charters from Cozumel.

The ferry crossing is a high speed jet boat and takes between 35 - 45 minutes depending on sea conditions. A dive boat takes significantly longer, requires special permits to cross the channel, and sea conditions that time of year are not the best for crossing the channel except in the large boats, such as the ferries. It would be a long rough ride. The ferry's RARELY get shut down, it takes a pretty big storm or dangerous winds to shut the ferry down.

There is a car ferry, but the schedule is more limited and it take 3x's longer to cross than on the regular ferry - it's also about 4x's the cost and completely unnecessary.

It depends on what you want to do. If your interest is primarily diving the reefs, Cozumel is definitely the place to stay, also less expensive than staying in Playa. You can always plan a day to go over and do the cenotes and ruins. There are actually tours avaialble that include two cenote dives followed by a trip to the ruins in Tulum. It can easily be done in one day.

Flying to Cancun vs. Cozumel is MAYBE a 15 minute difference in flight time, if even that - but pricing can be different depending on when and where you are coming from. It's very easy and economical to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and then to take the ferry to CZM if you fly into Cancun as well. Renting a car to get yourself from CUN to PDC is not necessary.

Why not do both..... I have never found a need for a car the ADO has a awesome buss system here a guide i found online before my last trip
Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen/Cozumel by ADO Bus

I love walking around both cites and both have some awesome diving cozumal has beautiful reef diving and play del carmon has majestic cave/cavern diving. I was staying for a longer then a week i would defiantly look into doing both why travel so far away and be so close to such a awsome dive experience and miss out on the reefs or the cenotes. ( thats if caverns are something your interested and you are comfortable with the skill level needed for cavern diving plenty of other threads float around to read )
Last trip the money i saved from flying into Cancun payed for my hotel for 2 nights and 2 days of cenotes diving for 2 people

If i was going for a week i would fly direct to Cozumel and spend 5 days on the reef and my last day off gassing kicking my self for not taking a longer vacation.:wavey:

This trip we are doing 2 days in playa cavern diving then fairy over 5 days of diving in cozumal . Then we taking ferry back over and going to do 1 or 2 days seeing ruins around Mexico before we fly home..

For a one week trip, if you can get to Playa del Carmen before the last ferry leaves for Cozumel, go ahead and fly into Cancun and take the bus/ferry.

Dive the number of days you wish then on the last day of diving, transfer to the Playa del Carmen area and stay there long enough to do your cenote diving and ruins trips.

You can stay around PDC the entire trip but the ferry costs will add about 310 pesos per day to get to Cozumel.

May I strongly suggest that you use a Cozumel-based dive op. Where you sleep is your choice. But don't plan on making daily trips on a dive boat to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen.

Thanks to you all! Let's suppose I do both, what's the most optimal way to arrange the visit? Here are the parameters. I'm planning to stay there for about 11 nights, say 5-6 nights on each side. I'd like to dive almost every day, maybe sometimes twice. Do multiple Cozumel wall dives, some night dives, Cenotes at least once or twice, but also visit Chitzen Itza, whatever other non-marine attractions that region has to offer, experience some local culture, some night life. Given my interest in diving, I'd probably want to spend most of my mornings in Coz.

One option seems to be to fly to Cancun (non-stop flight), get some kind of local transportation to Cozumel, stay there for 5-6 days, get the ferry back to Playa, maybe then rent a car to do sightseeing, and spend the remaining days diving Cenotes and/or taking morning ferry to Cancun, to do more wall diving. Does it work? Also, how much pain will it be with one big and one small person dragging 4 heavy suitcases + 2 carry-ons? Is there some way to get all the way end-to-end from the Cancun airport to Coz hotels via van, or some such, to minimize inconvenience?

Another option, I don't know if better, would be to rent a car in Cancun, and travel over the car ferry. If we're spending 5-6 days on Cancun, this seems reasonable. Or not? Is the car ferry still running? I think I've seem some post claiming it's not.

Yet another option would be to fly to Coz, then fly back out of Cancun... flight to Coz take a few hours longer from where I live, not sure if this is really better than taking the ferry.

Other options? What would you suggest? Does the possibility of el Nortes somehow factor into the answer? How many days of el Nortes should we expect at the end of December during this visit? Do the Coz operators offer diving Cenotes as a backup if the port is closed? Or if not, is there enough time in the morning to take the ferry and hook up with an operator on the other side?

Allow me to create a notional high level trip plan.

Day 1: Travel to Cancun and take the bus and ferry to Cozumel or fly into Cozumel. Possible afternoon or twilight dive on day 1

Day 2: Minimum two dives

Day 3: Minimum two dives. Possible island tour

Day 4: Minimum two dives: Possible island ruins trip (San Gervasio)

Day 5: Minimum two dives:

Day 6: Leave on ferry to Playa del Carmen. Rent car. Drive to Ek Balam ruins. Visit Dzitnup/Samula cenotes. Overnight in Valladolid and spend time looking around.

Day 7: Get to C. Itza at 0800. Three hours or so then on to Ik Kil cenote. Drive to Coba ruins then on to Playa del Carmen or vicinity hotel. Return car.

Day 8: Cenote diving. Personally I would avoid Chac Mool. Dos Ojos, carwash, Gran etc would be two days of cenote diving

Day 9: Tulum ruins by ADO bus. Akumal snorkeling

Day 10: Xplor ziplines or day trip to Cozumel to dive

Day 11: Add whatever.

Day 12: ADO bus to Cancun airport. Can also use a private transfer like usa-transfers.com or canadatransfers.com

Adjust to meet your needs. You could keep the car one more day after returning from C. Itza and drive to Tulum/Akumal.

As far as luggage, there are porters at appropriate places. I do not know what you are taking but it sounds excessive from a guy who travels with carry-on luggage only.

The Mayan Adventure map/guide from cancunmap.com may be very useful if you rent a car to see ruins as I describe.

Sounds like a very ambitious plan. I would pass on the Gervasio ruins trip since you would be doing Chichen Itza and Tulum, so Gervasio would be very disappointing. The diving in Cozumel is much better than ocean diving in Playa, but the cenotes are incredible and a must-do if your experience level allows. Chac Mool and Tajma Ha with their haloclines are an incredible experience. Be sure and read: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/mexico/439307-word-wise-cenote-diving.html first. Personally, I would forget about a car rental anywhere. Parking in both Cozumel and PDC is a major pain. The ADO bus (AC, cheap ~$12), & very comfortable) from Cancun airport to PDC is easy and it drops you 1 blk. from the ferry terminal to go to Cozumel.

We stayed at Casa Mexicana: Welcome to Hotel Casa Mexicana | Cozumel | Mexico and did our diving with Aldora Divers: Bienvenidos - Aldora Divers | Only the best of Cozumel. You get an included full breakfast, clean rooms, and just a couple of blocks walking distance to the Aldora docks. Piece of cake, no car needed. In Playa del Carmen, a nice, centrally located hotel is Hotel Cielo: Playa del Carmen Hotel - Hotel Cielo, 2 blocks from Fatasea Dive, and right off the beach. Be very choosey with whom you do your cenote diving with. I use Fantasea Dive: Diving Playa Del Carmen, Dive Center, Cenotes, Tech and full Cave diving. Jason is now a cave dive guide, but Klaus: https://www.facebook.com/bosbach has lived in PDC for many, many years and helped map many of the cenotes. My 2 cents.

We go to both regularly. This coming trip we have in November will have us flying into Cozumel, 7 days there. Then the ferry to Playa, 7 days there and then flying out of Cun. We would prefer flying into Coz over Cun just for the shorter Customs ordeal. Plus, I'd rather do the 45-1 hour airport drive at the end of vacation instead of the beginning.

Most of our diving will be in Coz, 5 days. Coz will be relax time, seeing it's a lot slower than Playa. Diving in Playa is awesome to. We always hit our fav. dives in the area at Punta Venado and the Mama Vina shipwreck. Also, a day of Cenote diving at Dos Ojos, a day in Puerto Morelos diving the wreck there. Then an afternoon Bullshark dive :) The rest of Playa time is Beach at Tulum a couple days, shopping and some nightlife :) Can't wait. Hope you have a great trip!!
