I'm excited!! Picked up all my SDI DM training materials today. Not sure if I'm going to continue to instructor or not, but I'm ready for some hard work & a bit of fun along the way!

Welcome(?) to SB. Good luck with your DMT, mine was tough but learnt a lot, ask lots of questions and practise as much as you can. Cheers.

Sorry just noticed you joined last year.

Congrats on the big step. Study, learn, watch, listen, study, learn, watch and listen some more  Seriously, shadow as many different instructors as you can and pick up things from each of them. DM training is well worth the time and effort. Tonight I'm sitting in on an OW class with a master instructor I have not had an opportunity to work with yet. Congrats and plan on staying wet!!

Sounds like me when I started my Divemaster classes. I had absolutely no intention of continuing to Instructor, just wanted to increase my knowledge, experience and help others enjoy diving. About 2 years later, I was an instructor. Oops... LOL!!

It's a lot of work, but extremely fun & rewarding. And as was said, work with as many instructors as you can while you work thru the program. I learned something different from every instructor I worked with, and still do. Someone always has a different way of teaching something, and sometimes they'll show you something new you never considered.

Enjoy it!

Along the lines of working with different instructors, I guess I just ask them if I can shadow them in classes? The shop I'm working with is small, one instructor and one assistant instructor. I like the idea of seeing different techniques and teaching styles. Maybe offer the other shops a bit of "slave labor" in exchange for allowing me to shadow them? I'm old but not opposed to lugging tanks & gear around.

I would, but I'd also discuss it with your shop first to make sure they don't mind. It may be a non-issue, but some shops may take the "I don't want you working with my competitors" attitude. I'm not supporting that attitude, just mentioning it. And if they do give you a hard time, then ask them "OK then, what do you recommend for me to be able to work with multiple instructors to enhance my training?". See what they say.

I have been working on DM in between all the fun of owning my own very new plumbing company and playing hockey on four different teams, so it's been slow. Almost done though!!

2 funny things happened while I was working on my skills demonstrations. I almost drowned my instructor because he was laughing too hard on the first one!

i was trying to ask him (underwater of course!) what the hand signal was for the skill I was demonstrating. I pointed to my hand and waved it at him...figuring it would look like "hand signal??" to him. What I failed to realize was that I was pointing to my thumb & index finger that were making a circle...so it looked like I was signaling "fornicate??" ( You get the idea!) instead of "hand signals??" He laughed pretty hard at me there!!

Second time I made him laugh was when I was demonstrating taking off my gear & putting it back on. Instead of having my right knee up and my left leg back, I had it the other way. When I removed my gear & swung it around & put the tank on my knee, I ripped the regulator out of the mouthpiece. I didn't even realize it until I breathed out and went to take a breath. Oops!! I'm kneeling with my gear off and just the mouthpiece in my mouth. He gave me his octo, input my gear back on and then got my octo. I guess not panicking made it a passing score!

All I need to do now is lead a dive and take the written test and I'll be done! Woo!
