STA bolt too short or am I doing something wrong?

I bought an Oxycheq STA as part of my new BPW setup. The bottom bolt that came with it is barely long enough and the other one is clearly NOT long enough. Unless of course I'm doing something wrong which is why I'm posting this.

The top bolt passes through the STA, through the wing grommet, through the webbing grommet, and through the backplate itself. From my perspective, the thing is 1/2" short to have enough room to get the washer and wingnut secure.

Am I possibly doing something wrong (don't think so) or do I need to get a longer bolt (think this is the case)?

It is possible it is too short, just go to a hardware store and get some SS bolts that are longer, about $5.

I Agree with Hashime. I got mine from ACE Hardware. I suggest you get a few extra, as well as washers & wingnuts, for your SAD kit.

What shape is the STA backbone and how are you mounting it? Pic would help alot.

Not at all impossible that the bolts are the wrong size. There are variables. Not all setups will have you stacking two grommets between the plate and STA (most will though; my harness grommet passes below the wing grommet). Years ago I bought an Oxy lightweight STA (the wishbone shaped one) and it came with bolts way out of whack for my rig (can't remember if they were too long or too short). I wrote Oxy and they told me to go buy ones that fit (my STA also had all sharp raw unfinished edges, unlike the nicely finished ones I've seen since, and Oxy told me to go buy a file--I've always wanted to send that STA back and still sometimes think to do so as it scratches up my tanks). In any case, when it comes to SS carriage bolts or the longer hex head bolts I use for doubles, I now always buy them long (1.5"-2" carriage; 6" hex head) and I have a vice, a hacksaw, and a file. It takes 2 minutes to cut each one to the exact size you need.

I bought the mini oxy sta and the bolts were too small use, clearly no one at oxy tried them otherwise they would have supplied ones that you can actually use. So anyway had to buy some longer ones not a biggy but a little inconvenient.

I had the same problem when I bought that STA.

I bought longer 316 SS ones from mcmaster. It's a good idea to buy a couple extra too just in case, esp the wing nuts. At least for me since somehow I've lost a couple.

They are "carriage screws" with round head and square neck 5/16-18 thread, 1 1/2" long.

As somebody said earlier, double stacking grommets is not always the norm. You want to have a couple in your SAD in any event. I get mine from a marine hardware store; a little more expensive than the box stores, but I am assured of the quality. (tip..do not buy "SS" bolt snaps from the box stores. I've found the "guts" are not stainless.)
