Hey ya'll.. there's a new wave of "spyware/malware" out thats just causing us techs fitz right now. This afternoon had 5 laptops lined up on my bench all the with same problems: Pop ups, home page hijacked, and redirected searches.

Make sure your antivirus programs are up to date, your spyware cleaners are current (Spybot S&D has a new version out - 1.3, adaware has new updates) and most importantly, flush those temp files when your done! :)

If anyone has any problems or question post it up or PM me and I'll do my best to walk you through how to do things :)

Wow!!

I have been doing battle this evening with this same situation on my home PC. SpyBot and Adaware have been really good to me but it looks like it's update time.

I thought it was the kids....

My computer was down for over a month with the Blaster virus & a couple others as well. Had the same problems: endless pop-ups, hijacked home page...it was a nightmare. I had a friend put many, many hours into fixing it.
It was especially tough on me because I was homebound w/ a back injury & had no acess to the internet. It just got up & running on Monday night.

My home network is a tough nut to crack, a Cisco PIX firewall, Symantec's Internet Security 2004, Ad-Aware, and cookies turned off to name a few of my security measures. Can you guess I do some IT security work?

Kat - you'd love me as a tech. I have older laptops that I use a temporary loaners for people to check email and continue their home based business function, alibiet limited, so you really only expereince a limited down time. These machines are from clients who upgraded to new machines and donated these to my business to use as I see fit. :)

wstein - IT security or Dale from King of the Hill ;) I just stop mine at my DSL router. Its a configurable firewall, so I set things up there, but some of these progs are persistant.

Overall, I've seen a few unpleasant new ad-wares lately. They've been horrid to remove from PC's.

What can I say, I had some extra money laying around one day, and so I decided to make a hard network.

Next time ya have some extra $ laying around toss it my direction! :)

I always seem to mention the spyware/malware, but never say anything about virii infection. Here's a tool to help clean out some of those viruses. The best method for running it is to save the file to a folder on your desktop and extract it in there. After you've done that, reboot your PC in safe mode, go to that folder and run the program. I keep it book marked so that I can pull the latest version when I need it for client work:

It's deja vu all over again! This has been happening to me PLUS my IE6 freezes up.

Thankfully, we're having an IT and his s/o over Sunday for a BBQ with the express purpose of having him try to debug my desktop.

In the meantime, I've printed out this thread with the llink for that program. Thanks, mon! :thumb:

Hey Colin, thanks for reminding me to run ad-aware. Found 2 buggers, the software said it got rid of them.
