ok they corrected it. the article does not say that eagle rays can grow to 17 feet. what a freak accident though.
 
I prefer the striped variety myself :) The adjectives that come to my mind when thinking about eagle rays are graceful and aloof. This accident is so bizarre that it sounds like it came out of a Monty Python movie.

What's next - a nudibranch putting someone's eye out?
 
Now they'll put out a movie called "Barbs" and people will think it's unsafe to go back in the water (or on a boat). I hope they don't start calling rays killers now.

On a more serious note, my condolences to the family of the unfortunate victim.
