I just woke up from an unexpected long "nap" after diving with Rod, Greg and the Roddenberry Dive Team here in Avalon's Casino Point dive park. Thnaks to not setting an alarm, I'm going to miss the special screening of the movie with Rod leading a discussion about his father's creation. At least we had a great time last night at karaoke... they even dragged me on stage to sing! Probably sorry they did that, but that's another story.

Will see the movie later this week as it is playing through Thursday.

Great appeal to long-term fans:D

Spock and Uhura get it on and spend a little quality time together between the decks :shocked2: Karl Urban even looks like a young 'Bones' and has the wit to boot.
Most the other crew are already set in place. Chekov got me laughing with the unpronounceable voice authorization.

Spock the (original) pops up in a cave on some cold, god forgiven planet then tries to explain to the young rebellious and volatile James T, (Pine) the reasons why they are both there at the same time. All that after James T just pissed off a young and commanding captain spock aboard the enterprise only space minutes earlier.. It's a time line thing - Just roll with it.

Oh' and then there's 'Scottie' Simon pegg. Came into the movie at the right time for me, brings a much needed boost of humor and energy halfway through.

Spock meeting alternate self at the end?

Go watch it.

What!! :shocked2:

Pearls before swine...

Just saw the movie yesterday, and totally enjoyed it. Yes there are some definite changes from the Star Trek of old, but this is actually explained by the fact that some happenings in the movie changes the way things were. It (IMHO) does not hurt the movie at all and actually makes it able to stand by itself. One thing that (again IMHO) is right on is the relationship between the characters. And since that is the heart and soul of Star Trek, this movie rocks!

I thought the bad guy had a little more fire power than a typical mining ship should. Even with improvements!

If you read the comic book-based prequels, you learn that the mining ship was upgraded with Borg technology. NOT a stock mining ship.

Kirk gets beat up a lot, regards regulations as general guidelines for other people and sleeps with aliens - EXACTLY like the original.

I liked the attitude Kirk had eating the apple during the Kobayashi Maru, which was exactly the same attitude as Kirk eating the apple while stranded inside the Genesis Cave in STII

***SPOILER ALERT***

I liked most of the characters except for Uhura. She was too "uppity" for my taste. Of course since they rewrote the whole story of the original cast (yknow those pesky space-time continuum things) they can do whatever they want with it. Not sure if I am down with the Uhura/Spock romance. Since Rodenberry and Majel are not here to contest anything, they had the freedom to pick and choose whatever they wanted to put on the screen. That being said, I did like the flow of the characters and as a die hard original Trekker, I was happy to hear the lines that made these characters famous. It was entertaining and I think we could see a few more movies out of this group.

When it comes to the cinematography, I am over the jerky camera stuff. That is why I hated the battle scenes in the movie Gladiator. I know they want to show action, but when it disrupts the movie, you do more to ruin the scene than improve on it. I can imagine seeing this in an Imax theatre would make the jerky movements even more extreme to watch.

One scene that really bothered me was the famous test of Kirk during his training with the Kobayashi Maru. We find out in The Wrath of Khan that Kirk had cheated on that test. But the portrayal of him in the new movie of being smug and eating an apple during the test was totally misrepresented of why Kirk had changed the criteria of the test. I could get all into this, but of all the things in this movie, that was totally not the character of Kirk as Rodenberry created.

Overall it's a good matinee flick. Enjoy!
