The BCD section has become consumed with discussion about BP/W's. It is to the point that you can't get advice on non BP/W questions there anymore. Any request for information about non-BP/W BCDs is met with 10 responses of "you should get a BP/W."

Most of the non-BP/W users have quit posting in that forum due to the beating that they take when they mention anything but a BP/W. While the BP/W may be a great option for some, the majority of divers out there are not in BP/W setups and still need advice there as well.

My suggestion is to split this forum.

How about subsections like:

Traditional BCDs (Jacket/Back-inflate)
Backplates & Wings

That way posters interested in each could inquire and receive non combative discussions on each type of platform. I believe this would also bring more traditional BCD owners back to the forum for discussions who may otherwise be reluctant to post these days due to the current bias.

More fun to argue what BC you think others should use

I think any situation that inhibits discussion is ultimately bad for ScubaBoard ...

i agree completely... but banning an entire topic from a forum will inhibit discussion of that subject

and allowing a broader discussion to become dominated by a vocal minority isn't a good thing.

unfortunately, banning an entire subject (bp/wings) from a forum that discusses that very subject (bp/wings are BCD's) is even worse

No one is talking about banning. Were the Recreational divers banned when the DIR folks got their own section where non-DIR discussion was not allowed? That's all we are talking about.

Thats why we have topics and Sub-Topics, Regulators, Computers etc. The topic won't be banned and people can have freedom of choice to read about the backplate and wing if they choose. The important thing here is they will have the choice.

Won't inhibit discusion from those who want it.

H2Andy:
i simply don't see how respoding to a question about which BCD's travel light by saying "a bp/wings" is "off-topic," sorry

BP/Wings *ARE* BCD's

by your suggestion, the two guys who said "get a BP/Wings" would get their posts deleted or moved to another forum.
It isn't that posting about a bp/w is gererally off-topic in a travel BCD thread. It is that posting about a bp/w is off topic in a thread where the OP posted that he only wanted info about jacket BCD's, not bp/w (hence the "Must be jacket, not wing" statement in the original post).

And yes, in this case, I think that the two posts that said "get a bp/w" were off-topic since the OP specifically said he wasn't interested in a bp/w.

Yes they are. They are talking about banning the discussion of one over rated type of BC from the BC forum. I disagree with those who think it's the best thing in BCs, but I support their right to discuss it in the BC forum. The back/plate/wing IS a BC.

Three BCDs for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Net Doc on his dark throne
In the Land of Florida where the Servers lie.
One Forum to rule them all, One Forum to find them,
One Forum to bring them all and in the Ocean bind them
In the Land of Florida where the Servers lie.

well, there's obviously valid points on both sides.

that's why making a decision will be hard. this is not a no-brainer.

however, I do note that the thread that seems to have motivated Jarrett to start this thread:

http://scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=169475

was actually a question about BP/Wings, which didn't stop him from complaining that there are too many BP/wings answers these days.

i am just so weary whenever someone wants to exclude others from expressing their opinions. that's censorship.

engage in the dialogue. convince the poster that a jacket-style BCD is just as good as a BP/wings style BCD. engange in the marketplace of ideas.

don't censor a group's opinion.

Walter:
Yes they are.

No, banning would be saying "no more discussion of BP/W's on any part of Scubaboard." Think of it like this, the BP/W discussion is so important that it needs its own section for it :)

:D well we got the pro BP/W team out in force...:D

This is like taking away third world countries from missionarys....
