The BCD section has become consumed with discussion about BP/W's. It is to the point that you can't get advice on non BP/W questions there anymore. Any request for information about non-BP/W BCDs is met with 10 responses of "you should get a BP/W."

Most of the non-BP/W users have quit posting in that forum due to the beating that they take when they mention anything but a BP/W. While the BP/W may be a great option for some, the majority of divers out there are not in BP/W setups and still need advice there as well.

My suggestion is to split this forum.

How about subsections like:

Traditional BCDs (Jacket/Back-inflate)
Backplates & Wings

That way posters interested in each could inquire and receive non combative discussions on each type of platform. I believe this would also bring more traditional BCD owners back to the forum for discussions who may otherwise be reluctant to post these days due to the current bias.

on our smaller scale injecting discussions about religious diving issues into threads where they are explicitly not wanted is disruptive. structuring the board to reduce that disruption is not censorship.

totally unrelated issue, and clearly biased (as it seems to label those who prefer BP/Wings as religious fanatics)

we're talking about NOT talking about SOME BCD's in the BCD forum. you can talk about all these styles of BCD, but NOT bp/wings.

to use the religious metaphor accurately, it would be like having a religious forum but not allowing any MORMONS to talk about their faith while everybody else gets to, and sending the Mormons to their own forum, all by their lonesome

now, they're not asking for their own forum, they're being sent there whether they want to or not

fair?

Andy, how much do you love posting about BP/W in the BCD section?:D

OK I'll stop joking, can you explain why you feel having three forums , one Traditional, one BP/W and one to discuss them againts each other would be so bad?

well, i thought i have?

because bp/wings ARE BCD's and it makes no sense to allow people to talk about all types of BCD's in one forum EXCEPT bp/wings

and because the reasons given to separate them don't hold water. we're solving an imaginary problem.

new divers need more information, not less.

not too much, but i do love my bp./wings and want to let new divers know about them

how worried are you that the BCD manufacturers and advertisers may get upset that their products are being upstaged by these "bp/wings" things?

I have concerns that the traditioanl BCD divers feel like any post they make get turned to BP/W

So the missionary aspect wasn't that far off...:D

Less concerned than I am about my first comment. From the point of selling ads, yes keeping them seperate could help, no question. I would rather see more companies offer a BP/W option.

not sure that gagging people is the solution, though

alright... i've been suckered into yet another bottomless pit thread

NO MORE!

:11doh:

off i go to do something or other

couldn't we use the same argument to open up the DIR forum to everybody?

nope.. think about it

Fascinating. It's like watching the articulation of denial.

It has gotten sooooo predictable, that when I see a thread that I wouldn't even usually look at - "I'm choosing between these two jackets, anyone have experience with them?" - and I'll open it just to see if the usual "You should be using a BP/W" post has shown up in the usual 5 to 7 posts.

Most of why I don't usually bother posting in a BC thread: tired of being shouted down. Sheesh.

The problem is real.

Heaven knows, I'm as neutral on the issue as can be...I own 3 plates and 2 jackets and use them all.

All the best, James

I agree! That's why we need two forums. So they can hear from people with differing opinions.

i'm assuming that it is.

i'm saying separating the BCD forum into two isn't the solution
