I think part of the reason "so few post here" is that it's opt-in. Which means that for those who have discovered the "New Posts" button and tend to use it for primary searches, they won't even know about this forum, since the posts to it only show up if the user has opted.

Unless of course:

- someone mentions it in a post and links to the forum or a post in the forum (rare)

or

- they happen to be looking at the main index and see it on the list and opt in.

but, Rob, you cannot gaurantee any one else's safety.

I can't speak for Rob, but I try not to do things that can harm others. I agree with you that I am not responsible for another's actions, unless I've misled them in some manner.

I think the warning Pete posted should allow us all to feel free to speak our minds while in this forum.

Solo Diving is replete with it's own hazards. As with any diving discipline, Solo Diving should never be taken on lightly, without proper training or just because you are too lazy to find a buddy. In fact many agencies frown on this practice, and some prohibit it out-right.

Still, there are many out there who practice this type of diving and so it's techniques and safety should be discussed in an open forum. As with all open forums, it is up to the individual diver to ascertain the validity of anything suggested within. There are many who would offer you their opinions and yet have never done a solo dive or are possibly unsafe divers. Only YOU have control over your destiny. Choose who you listen to wisely.

How is this any different from flying solo, or anything else? Pilots don't sit around and say SHHHHH, don't talk about flying your plane alone....somebody might do it and have a heart attack. What is special about SCUBA?

That is exactly what I want to know. People take all types of risks in their daily lives both on the job and off and not think a thing of it but put the word scuba in and suddenly the sky might fall on you. I ain't rocket science.

captain:
It ain't rocket science.

No, it ain't. OTOH, the average IQ is 100. Some are above average, some are below. Average ain't all that smart to begin with and when you consider lots aren't even that sharp........

And in a lot of cases, IQ isn't as important as having good judgement and common sense. I've met a lot of high IQ people whose judgement I wouldn't trust.

Unfortunately, common sense isn't all that common. :)

Walter thanks for posting Pete's words. he strikes me as wise quite often.

I still feel you seem to be on the fence. Do you want rules about what we can/cannot say about solo, in the solo forum?

DITTO Charlie....I did a whole rant about that. I know so many...(I call them arrested intellectuals) with no common sense. They will reguritate facts and formulas till the cows come home. Sometimes they are the most dangerous divers to stick with because they do not know what they do not know AND---they think they are smarter than the ocean! They actually think they will out-smart her power.

I don't really care. I don't see a point in even having the forum. I don't understand the concept. If you are inclined to dive solo and have the necessary experience to do it safely, why would you be asking questions about the practice? If you don't, I'm not going to help you get into the practice.

Scuba training evolved from skin diving which evolved from Red Cross and YMCA swimming lessons.

Let's blame it on the Red Cross and the YMCA and their "never swim alone" mantra in the courses in which many youngsters first learn to swim.

Somehow the solo vs. buddy thing has taken on much more signficance in water sports than in other activities.

I find it strange that discussions of solo diving on SB have to be segregated off into an opt-in forum. Another alternative would be like the DIR forum, which is not an opt-in, but is a "no troll" zone. I see no reason why that sort of setup wouldn't work for solo diving discussions also.

I see it differently. I think both are important.
