I am wondering why 9 people so far, have absolutely no desire to see the otherside. How can you know which you prefer without trying both?

Me personally I fell in love with Apollo Bio-Fins, and I don't think I will ever switch them for another fin. I find them extremely comfortable and more efficient than any other fin I have used.

Open heel spilt fins tend to be pretty expensive. Full foots are much less expensive as are used Jets on ebay. Speaking of Jets, you can sell them on ebay for the same price or more.

I started with Aqua Lung blades, bought a pair of flexible $25 full foots, and a pair of $25 Jets.

I figure the flexible full foots will be similar to split fins. I use the jets when I shoot video, the full foots for everything else.

Well I thought this debate was using Ceteris Paribus, but yeah the split fins will really kick azz in the wallet department.

Cete Pari what ?

If I am going to "try out" something, that I may not like, price is going to be a factor since most likely I will not be able to recoup the $$.

Trinigordo:
Ok, but how many people started diving in conditions like that? All I am saying is as a recreational diver before you are sold on either one, try them both.

Why can't you use them again? I mean, I have never done a frog kick before, but I am pretty sure split fins wouldn't stop you from doing it.
Gudieline entanglement in a cave is one reason. I have a pair of split fins I sometimes use in open water.

It is a latin term meaning all else equal.

Hmmmm, how so?

The fins I have are rather a hybrid of the 2, although probably considered a blade fin. I have Genisis Response fins. They have rigid, yet somewhat flexible outer edges & flanks & a soft rubber web in the middle. The rubber web allows the fin to flex even more like a split fin. So you have the best of both worlds. The rigidity for power & the flexibility for the ease on the leg muscles.

Ditto, I have the Genesis Response fins also and couldn't be happier...

Too much Economics for you .

I still use my Plana Avantis which I purchased when Regan was president. They have started to yellow a bit and one of the boot areas has caved in when I am not using it.

Found my wife's Apollo bio-fins in my dive bag the other day while doing some diving. I decided to try them out for myself. They have low resistance and seemed ok for normal kicking motions. Another positive is the fact that they can keep the top of your feet from hurting (if this happens to you) because of the lower resistance. However I like a fin which allows for a variety of non traditional kicking motions, kicking backwards or dolphin kicks for a quick descent (or ascent if I am freediving).

While I am happy that I finally learned what all the fuss is about, I will keep my plana avantis until they die or I die. Whichever comes first.

A misplaced kick close to the guideline can cause the line to get caught in the split of the fin. It can happen very easily. This is the same reason you either tape the fin straps ore use springs
