The spindle in your photo looks perfectly fine. Just pop off the o-rings soak the spindle in vinegar to remove any corrosion, rinse, dry, and replace with new o-rings (003). If you've already replaced the spindle, do the above and carry it as a spare. You are correct, nothing about reg repair is "brain surgery", although some techs (usually the incompetent ones) would have you believe it is.
