SubGear may not be for you, but I doult if you buy your blue jeans at Gap!

Not knocking the brand-just the name...and I don't know what the heck General Accounting Procedures has to do with blue jeans.

For me, I would probably buy old reliable gear rather then inexpensive new gear but I have the benefit of some experience.

I woke up about the scuba industry way back when Scubapro and NASDS were found to be illegally using the so called "fair-trade" laws in California to engage in price fixing. They have only changed their approach barely enough to stay legal, which does not qualify them as a company that I am comfortable doing business with.

I was sorry to see Leisure Pro become an authorized Scubapro dealer. They used to have really good prices on scubapro equipment

They still do if you call them and ask.

Do you really think my 700+ posts are a feasible marketing ploy?

Feasible? I guess that depends on how your sales are going since you joined this forum and began posting your 'helpful' posts.

Marketing 'ploy' (or technique)? Sure, in the sense that marketing is about reaching specific groups of people that are likely to have interest in your product. But that would also be served simply by being a useful member of this community, as are several others with commercial interest in the forum.

What many of your 700+ posts (the ones that I've seen) are, in large, simply blatant and often off-topic sales pitches. That's different than a marketing ploy.

I'll give Scubapro another few years before they either go belly up or are in serious financial peril.
Do you really believe that ludicrous statement?

Scubapro has reach 50 years in the SCUBA industry!

Would you bet on a company that has successfully been in business for 50 years or 5 years?

I guess that is why Scubapro sales are way up this year.

Yeah I do. Scubapro can claim they are leaders in whatever they want. So do a bunch of other companies.
They have been able to BS people along with their dealer puppets for a long time now. But the internet and the freedom of information is a very new thing and growing leaps and bounds.
Why is Subgear so much cheaper? I heard the two are made in the same facility using the same inerds?
I hear Subgear has a reg that's the exact same thing as a MK2 but it's way cheaper and uses the exact same kit. Why isn't the SP reg the same price then?

Oh my god this is delicious!
The bigger they are the harder they fall...Old habits die hard but they will die...It's a whole new world out there. New thinking and keeping up with the times is how companies survive. Kodak missed the bus, American car companies missed the bus (but were artificially put on life support so they are still breathing). Like I said, it's a brand new game and playing with old rules when people were kept in the dark and had to believe what a dealer told them are ending.
So to answer your question, I would rather invest in a reg from a company of 5 years that is cutting edge in both business model and product then a company of 50 years where nothing much has changed but still has archaic business practices because they are too stubborn or senile to open their eyes and see reality.
I don't see the point in paying a premium for a product just because the company is too top heavy to compete and has to big of a machine to feed so they have to resort to price gouging and hype to try and lure in new customers to hold up their house of cards. This to me (IMO) is a good indiator that things are not good if a company can't reorganize and be more competitive. This is how big bloated companies eventually fail.
I see Subgear as an attempt to be more competitive, it seems like a shot of adrenaline to me.
Why didn't they just rework the SP policy? I'll bet it's because they can't, the math probably doesn't work anymore.

I guess that is why Scubapro sales are way up this year.
According to whom? Are your sales way up this year? If so that's great for you, but how do you know they are up everywhere else? Have you actually seen their records or are you just parroting something that a field rep told you?
Don't always believe everything you hear.

Look what happened to Dacor. They were around a lot longer than Scubapro and made decent stuff - but they evaporated almost over night.

Something else to consider is that Scubapro over the last 5 years or so has made about 40% of their sales through on-line retailers - this is during a period when Scubapro (wink, wink) did not condone on-line sales. They did not condone it, but they certainly could not afford to prevent on-line sales and had no incentive to do so.

The point is that Scubapro's gross sales have nothing to do with the health and variability of their dealer network but if the brick and mortar dealer network goes down the tubes in the US, Scubapro is pretty much done as a viable dive company in the US. It's something they need to consider.

Yes, our Scubapro sales are way up.
