I have a MK200 First Stage and have been happy with it so far but I have been diving colder and colder water (Minnesota) and have concernce about freezing up/free flow. LDS put the cold water kit in (silicone grease, I think is all) but I do not have the S.P.E.C. Boot (part# 10-200-105), do I need it? What does it help with? I don't Ice Dive and if I did; I have an Apek ATX50 but I like the way my MK200/G200B breaths.

The SPEC version of the MK2/200 has a special cap with smaller countersunk ambient port holes to prevent the grease from escaping. You can see them here. The boot is a rubber ring that covers the holes and keeps the grease in, while transmitting the water pressure. If you don't have it, it'll be a bit messy, and you may have to "top off" the grease once in a while. If you're handy, you can make one up.

Do you think the MK200/G200B breathes better than the Apeks?

Thanks. I know at this time SP is breathing easier than the Apek. I just had the Apek serviced thinking that would help. I have had the Apek for most the summer and every time I use it have been disappointed and go back to the SP. It may just be in the techs setting them up but it feel like I have to draw air in. I was not trying to put Apek down.

Both second stages share the same basic design. You may want to ask your tech to fine tune your Apeks a bit.

I too prefer SP, but AP may be better suited for MN winters.
