Hi. I picked up a Hollis DCX 1st stage with a Hollis 200LX primary second stage. I had it immediately fully serviced at a LDS. I've since dove with it 8 or 9 dives. I find it too easy to free flow and I'm wondering if there's something wrong. Per the Hollis instructions I've seen, you're supposed to set the inhalation effort at full counter clockwise - then back one full turn. I find when I do this and open the venturi it immediately free flows in water(yes with the mouthpiece pointed down). I've been tightening the effort knob a few turns and only opening the venturi half way to compensate. Is this normal? In my mind I should be able to remove the reg from my mouth without free flowing, but have minimal effort to breath when in my mouth..

It would probably be best to back the adjustment knob all the way and adjust the orifice in an eighth turn, the micro adjust of these has a very tiny influence.

I just rebuilt one today, it’s a lame design but excellent performance.

If I pop my primary G250/G260 out of my mouth with the Venturi in Dive, even with the mouth bite pointed downward, it is going to free flow big time. My secondary I may/usually do not set quite as light as my primary but even at that I need to turn the Venturi to Off or Pre-dive and turn the effort knob in a turn or two. And still I may need to put my thumb (of the hand holding my mask) over the mouth bite during entry.

One of the service tests for adjustable second stages is that the regulator should free flow uninhibited with the Venturi in On/Dive position and should not free flow with the Venturi in Off/Pre-dive.

IMO, folks should really think of the Venturi knob/switch as On or Off. CW and CCW on the cracking effort knob is confusing and depends upon the vantage point. Your primary, if set very light as many prefer, you may need to turn the (cracking effort preload) knob in a little bit. If you have to turn it in more than a turn then you may need to adjust the MA in or adjust the seat or both.

Kind of an old post from me. What had me thrown off was the manuals instructions to dive with the effort knob one turn clockwise(?) from fully open. I've since started diving with the effort knob about halfway and the venturi knob set to dive(as soon as I enter water). Octo stays on 'off'

the main adjustment is on the orifice. if the cracking effort is to low when the adjustment knob is fully turned out CCW. 1.4” max

It's sounds like an adjustment issue. If you aren't comfortable adjusting it yourself, take it back to your shop. Hopefully, they don't over-adjust it the other way.
