Larry C:
I've been looking into storage drives. There was a previous thread, but I can't recall the name of the product right now. You can get 80g for about $350, and they essentially are a laptop hard drive with some sort of small cpu that allows you do download and view pictures, video, play music, etc. I've been debating whether to do that or go the laptop route. You can buy a brand new Compaq with a 40gb hard drive for something like $400, but then you have to carry it with you.
I know what you mean larry. I usually bring the laptop that way I can burn dvds too as another form of backup. Plus, I only a 14 inch screen laptop and not some of those humongous (sp?) ones nowadays so not too bad to carry. I'm now looking at 12 inchers though.

Product was Wolverine 80gb MVP. Available on Costco.com for $349 incl. shipping. Previous post on the other thread said they were slow downloading. That may be just a transfer rate issue with the memory card.

Fianally was able to test my housing yesturday for the first time! no leaks!...excellent

I will post pic's next time I get in the water and have the camera...hopefully soon!

On a different note, with all this travel security lockdown, do you think we won't be able to have carry on luggage in the future. Right now in the UK you can only bring a clear plastic bag and no liquids...

Buying defog in another country won't kill me but having to lug my housing and camera around in a bag might!

just curious

This is changing the subject, but I have been searching previous threads to no avail, about Magic Filter and use with strobes. Does this work well? Makers of Magic Filter indicate is is not compatible.

Thanks, Don

Magic filters are used to change the color balance of the incoming light. Your strobe produces light output closely approximating the color of sunlight. That's why your U/W images, taken with a strobe, display reds and do not have an overall blue/green cast.

Your images will have an overall tint of the same color as the Magic filter. Probably an orange or magenta cast.

I guess my question really is, does this work with reasonably good results, using flash with MagicFilter?

I think that I'm going to buy a screw on UR Pro filter (www.urprofilters.com) instead of the Magic Filter so I can screw it on for wide angle shots but remove it underwater for strobe photography. As I recall the 46mm filter for the Oly housing is around $80.

Bob,

Yes, the UR Pro filter looks good to me too! Do you or anyone else know the filter size and thread of the PT-030 and can filters and/or lenses be attached this way?

Thanx, Don

The thread size is 46mm. UR PRO filters are threaded on both sides, so you can put other lenses on top. I bought the green water filter when I first got my camera, but only used it once. The problem is, green water is also pretty dark. To shoot in natural light, you end up with shutter speeds in the 1/30 range at anything below about 24 feet, and then it's very difficult not to blur. Filters work best in tropical water in bright sunlight, at 40ft. and above.

Different subject. Just got back from a 3 day live aboard in the Channel Islands (Catalina was spectacular, with 70 degree water and 100ft. plus vis). Had a brand new SP owner on board-he had never shot it, and barely had it out of the package. With some assembly help from another diver who is Ikelite friendly, and a few minutes of set-up instruction on the camera from me, he was taking some excellent pictures. His only previous experience was with a low power p&s, and he said all his pictures were so bad, he wanted to get a decent set up. He bought a package from B&H with the SP-350, and Ikelite housing and an Ikelite DS-125 strobe and Oly Wide angle lens. Other than some blur outs from being too close with the WA lens and a couple of burns from having the strobe too close, this package took wonderful shots just shooting in "S" mode with manual focus at about 9 feet. He also had some nice shots in UW macro (though this is where he blew out a couple). The package is a little pricier than doing the PT-030 and a cheapie strobe, but with the results he was getting, it's certainly worth the extra cash if you have it.
