As far as gear on line, and warranty... you get what you pay for. How many people do you know would buy a car on line with no warranty if they could save a grand or two.... you never know what you are going to get. The year I purchased my new truck another guy purchased the same thing and got a lemon and I didn't. The warranty with Scubapro is very good, if you keep it serviced every year as you should if anything ever goes wrong with it they replace it 100% for free. That makes good sense to me, and besides what if I got it from an on-line place and it croaked while I was diving with it? I don't know I like dealing with my LDS my self.

Its true that some shops are willing to deal on their equipment. But to me 10% off list price isn't that great of a deal. Obviously the wholesale cost of this stuff isn't near retail or else a company like Liesure Pro couldn't exist. I assume that nonauthorized dealers purchase their gear for retail through a distributor and I would think are paying more than the local dive shop, after all the distributor has to make money too. However, they sell their equipment for lar less than the LDS. I would sure love to support the local dive shop, but on my extremely limited student and about to be married budget, its hard to fork over money that I could be saving by buying on line. Buying dive gear shouldn't be like buying a car (something i think everyone hates to do).

True. My Halcyon gear has a full US warranty. My drysuit has a full US warranty. My tanks, valves, and manifold all have full US warranties.

My Apeks regs have a European warranty, meaning that if I need warranty work, they have to be sent back to the distributor. Balanced against the likelihood of needing warranty work (low) the cost savings were still very high.

All were purchased online/mailorder/telephoned in.

I had a really interesting chat about this with my LDS recently.

I need two Apeks AXT200's - his price @$670 each.

A few days ago I told him the price on the internet (LPro @$378 - but they cannot even guess a delivery date so I think they are not getting supplied, Diveinn @$480 - in stock). We had the usual warranty discussion but he agreed to see what he could do to match it.

Today he told me that he wanted to do more but that he was contractually limited by Seaquest to only provide a maximum of 10% discount. He said he had talked to EVERYONE, including the company president. No change - 10% max - but the local rep had agreed to throw in a (good) dive bag.

The LDS is a good guy and I have no reason to doubt his story but Seaquest's attitude perplexes me. Why part with an expensive dive bag (that I do not really want) but not be willing to allow a slightly better discount. In fact - why control retailers discounts at all? Isn't it up to him to determine his margins? Anyone in the trade who can explain this?

The rub is, although it pains me to do it, I am probably going to pay the extra $250 or so and get them from my LDS. not sure I can even explain this decision to myself..........

I know what you mean...I've decided to buy from my LDS instead of Leisurepro. Why? I have no idea...I know that I'm spending too much. I think it has something to do with returning the loyalty that they have shown me - letting me run a tab on some of the trip and class fee's, free air fills most of the time, great service...

Of course, that could all just be a method of suckering me into feeling bad and buying from them :D

Make sure your LDS understands your doing this. 'Might not make any difference, but there may be some perks/bennies from him later on (i.e. free or discounted air fills, rentals, trips etc). His generousity and imagination are the only limits on those.

I purchased two Apeks ATX 200 regulators, and after looking on line at the prices and showing them to my LDS, he matched the price! So because of that, we have done all our shopping at his store, and each time, he gives me a minimum of 25% off all my purchases (I guess that him selling two of everything at a little less of a profit is still a profit). If you have a LDS that is willing to work with you, then that would be the route to go (I had to visit four different LDS before I found the one that worked with me).
I had the same problem as Grajan, one of my LDS would only offer 10% off, even thou I was buying two regulators, two wet suits, two computers, two BC's......all they said was 10% off or the sell price if it is on sell. So I went up the street to the other dive shop ;p

Gross margins at msrp seems to be about 50% for a lot of stuff (some has a lot smaller margins). So at 25% off he is still making some money even after SG&A, getting cashflow etc.
