Thanks but I would actually prefer to master this skill without a reel. I'm sure a reel will make it easier but I can store the SMB plus spool in my BCD pocket. I'm not sure I'll be able to fit a reel in there and I don't like stuff dangling off of me while I'm diving.

McMahon compact reel is good. Not sure id ever recommend the Buddy "pocket reel of death" to anyone though.

I use the divesigns stuff to mark my DSMBs (and tanks). About 300 dives on though and the lettering has peeled off my main DSMB (but thats gets used 3 times a day, every day).

the buddy reel is perfect, had a macmahon now replaced by the buddy

people don't know you have to remove the little sprung inside so that it doesn't lock and shoot to the surface..,

have used it now around ~100 times never had ANY problems to date

Thanks. But is that McMahon compact reel small enough to fit into a BCD pocket with the SMB?

Depends on your BCD pockets, in most cases yes
I have both Reel and I carry my buddy reel in the pocket together with a 6 feet buddy SMB
but I have a mares vector 1000 with very generous pocket
the macmahon would fit nicely too but definitely the buddy fits in ANY pocket

Dislike the closed nature of the buddy reel so that you cant see it snagged or anything until its too late. Have seen a fair few jams and ditches. McMahon might fit in a pocket or might not, depends on pocket. No issue to have it clipped off elsewhere though.
