Deefstes,

A good article and what a pity it's not global - as alas it's still 'business as usual' in a lot of Asia.

Diver65,

Correct, sharks can still be hauled on board, and the fins cut off - and there's still a long way to go until finning and the demand for fins is reduced, and shark fin soup is removed from the menus. Every little tightening of the laws helps I'm sure - but I do wonder if it will now be enforced in full ?

To quote from the article "The act also allows the United States to block seafood imports from countries that permit shark finning"

One wonders why it says "allows" and does not say such ban on imports "will" or "has been" imposed, and I'd be interested to know which countries the US has banned seafood imports from ? ....

Here's another effort going on - please do get your name on it -

In addition, main protection society in Taiwan is currently making people more aware of finning and the need for its reduction, article is in chinese language, but here's the link 台灣動物社會研究會

Meanwhile - down at the coastal markets, shark meat is readily available and sold, and yes that is shark meat !
