I have a dumb question... after soaking my gears in the water, I find that there are grease on the surface of the plastic parts on my gears. Is this normal? Am I damaging my gears?

I wouldn't do that if I were you. It sounds like you don't know enough about gears to maintain them properly. If you must, soak them. HOWEVER, that greasy substance you notice IS grease. You should always put grease back on. You can either you vaseline, or mechanic's molygrease, or (presuming these gears are for a scooter) use the manufacturer-specified lubricant. Remember, try not to soak the gears in water unless it is really necessary!

Hope that helps,
Taylor
