It is difficult to pay the rent on an instructor salary.
Those that do generally live in destination dive areas. IMO the best way to become an asset for a Dive Shop or Op is to have a LOT of skills. Instructor is just one of them.
In our area the ONLY instructors that are making a living full time in the dive industry either own the dive shop, are related to the owner of the dive shop, or work dive industry jobs (travel agent, sales rep, retail sales, tech) jobs and instruct as well.
The only folks I see making a living in our area in the dive industry are generally the owners and relatives in a dive shop.
Boulder John is an interesting Case as he is retired, but teaches a LOT as his supplemental source of income. I know of a couple of folks similar to John, but none of them lives on an instructors income alone.
