Yep , I read all 26 pages, 511 posts, Twice!! of that thread ... "Do you dive with or without your snorkel attached and why?" ... http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=89179 ... pretty passionate debate at times
Use it, or not ... depends on you, and the situation ... most times I do, sometimes I do not

Miketsp, your post gave me a pretty good laugh.

But since I'm new and didn't contribute to the 511 posts about it (that's friggen ridiculous), I don't use a snorkel. I ditched it soon after I did my open water cert. No one told me why or why not to use it, I just decided I never used the damn thing so I left it behind. Snorkels are for snorkeling I say. Plus I swim on my back on the surface.

I do take it with me in case I actually do want to snorkel when I'm done diving.

I don't like to use a snorkel. It just gets in the way. I have one that folds up and goes in my BC pocket just in case I have a long surface swim.

Another vote for a folding snorkle. Works fine for surface swims, when I want to be looking forward as I swim out. Also handy for end of dive, swimming around and checking things out before returning to the boat.
It's one of those one piece folding rubber jobs -- enough "give" so if I do have it on, underwater, it's not a hard obstruction for other things.
Not a great snorkle, no purge, breathes slightly wet, but it meets my definition of "good enough" for what I use it for.

I used my dad's 30 year old Dacor j-tube style snorkel for my BOW certification dives and gave it back to him right after - I don't miss it.

If you don't use a snorkel, at what point in your diving career did you get rid of it? Your thoughts?

Day I installed a long hose.
