Need to get one... are pencils really adequate for writing so it can be read?

Not for long as the wood tends to disintegrate. Many come with just a piece of carbon to write with. I really like wet notes for writing and a wrist slate for deco info.

Make one. Most of the golf pencils now are synthetic, but if you know anyone or are someone that golfs, just grab a few and you'll be fine

I think golf pencils are typically too hard (like 2H), thus write very lightly on a slate. Often it is better to get a 2B or even a 4B graphite stick from an art supply house; cut it in half and put some shrink wrap on it if you wish.

I use an aqua pencil and have never had to replace it after 8 years or so. Before that I used a flat carpenter's pencil that you can get at Home Depot. I cut it in half so it wouldn't be so long. It lasted for 2 years and then I lost it underwater. Probably the most inexpensive pencil for writing underwater.

also check out the Pilot Lead Holder Croquis all plastic so no rust and can be easily fitted with a string to tie to slate.
