Seems like there are three basic bug repellants: Deet, Skin So Soft and Cactus Juice. Personally have used the first two successfully in Central America (the Peten in Guatemala requires professional strength!). Plus I've seen Cactus Juice in Honduras - its adherants (so to speak) recommended it.
What always bugged me (I've got to stop this!) was that you generally need both bug repellant and serious SPF unless you are one of those Michigan ice divers maybe. When we got back from CA, the bottle of SSS was nearly empty, but a web search revealed you can buy the stuff weblike instead of having the Avon Person knocking on your door.
BUT NOW! They make the stuff WITH SPF 15/30! Now I won't have to make a choice between malaria and skin cancer! I can have it all! No, no, I mean neither. Ordered a couple bottles of 6oz for $6/7 a bottle in three wonderful scents. These haven't arrived, but I'm ready for NW mosquito season AND the sun.
