Might I suggest a judicious trimming of vbulletin options? There are boards running vbulletin with >= activity and <= server resources that run a whole lot faster. Since you are in contact with a vbulletin expert, perhaps you could inquire as to the most resource intensive and least used options and see what effect turning them off has on site response times and reliability.
