I have and have had 2 bad knees for many years. Yes, they do limit the ability to carry gear sometimes when going up ladders, hills, etc. But, I cannot think of a single exercise better for someone with bad knees than swimming. Consequently, I cannot think of single reason a person with bad knees can't dive.

Nope.
I know of a guy who has only one leg and is a certified diver.

Very helpful and encouraging. Hopefully we'll get a good instructor for the "Discover SCUBA" course, so we can ask questions. Thanks to everyone who responded

Starting out you probably won't know if the instructor is "bad" or "good" but ask any questions you have anyways. You want to be able to make an informed decision about continueing or not. Checkout the threads about choosing an instructor before you arrange the Discover SCUBA. If you know what to ask and know to talk with as many as is reasonable you might well be able to pick the one who seems to suit you best.
