I know there is no shore diving in the keys, but are there any places to hop in with a snorkel worth seeing?

You should try snorkeling at sunset at the Islamorada Fish Market docks. They bring the fish scraps out at sunset snd feed the fish.

You'll see LOTS of sharks. :rofl3:

Don't forget your camera :D

People will tell you that snorkeling in Harry Harris Park is good, but it isn't. It is wonderful exercise to snorkel around there, and it is a great park for a picnic or launching a boat, but you won't see anything worthwhile...or at least I never have. I just found it to be a real nice beach to take out of town folks to; there is a protected lagoon for swimming and you can relax on the beach.

Yes and no, snorkeling in the lagoon is not good but go snorkeling right off of "williamson point" where the picnic benches are and you will see many eagle rays.

Deeper, I haven't snorkeled there in a few years, when I did, I spent a couple hours in the water snorkeling ALL over but really didn't see anything, not even the rays. It was still a fun day! But didn't see as much life as in Pennekamp's lagoon.

RonFrank's post reminded me that you can also rent a kayak and snorkel in the mangroves. There is a great kayak op about MM104, Florida Bay Outfitters. I haven't snorkeled from their kayaks, but the water was so clear that I was able to see lots of sea life...including manatees...right from the kayak in Dusenberry Creek. A very worthwhile adventure.

photohikedive,

I used to freedive the pilings of the old bridges in the keys years ago. Each key has 2 bridges... a newer one and a very old one. The old bridge pilings have alot of growth and were great for spearing and lobstering. We would snorkel the Bahia Honda, 7 mile, Channel 5, and Long key bridges pretty often. When I used to do this you had to be South of Long key bridge to legally spear fish. In the summertime just before opening lobster season you can see literally thousands (mostly shorts) of lobsters under the pilings.

I am not sure what the rules are nowadays on diving the bridges. The currents are absolutely wicked and if you do this I would highly recommend only diving the bridges at the beginning of SLACK HIGH tide for best visibility and no current and be back before the current picks up from the other direction. Don't get caught out there when the tide turns and picks up full force again. The bridges also offer alot of blind spots with speeding boats going under and alongside the bridges so if you try this be careful and carry a dive flag.

There is Annie's Beach about 10 miles south of Tavenier. Basically keep the gear handy, and when you find an interesting place, pull off the road and try it out!

is spear fishing legal down there? I thought they had it zoned out

YOU CAN SPEARFISH SOUTH OF THE LONG KEY BRIDGE MM 68 , YOU HAVE TO BE 100 YARDS FROM A PUBLIC SWIMMING BEACH AND YOU CAN NOT SPEAR FROM ANY BRIDGE THAT IS A FISHING BRIDGE. ALSO 100YARDS FROM ANY MAN MADE JETTY. FOR JUST DIVING YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE FISHING BRIDGES, BUT YOU CAN SHORE DIVE HERE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR FLAGS OR YOUR IN DEEP POOP WITH THE FWC.
