Shore Diving in SE Asia

Hello everyone!

My partner and I are planning 6 months backpacking SE Asia in 2025 and will be traveling with our dive gear. We will be starting in Bangkok and the typical Thailand-Vietnam-Cambodia bacpacking trail before moving on to Borneo-SIngapore-Malapascua then all over Indonesia. We were wondering where we could find the best shore diving in SE Asia as renting tanks and exploring at our own pace sounds wonderful.

Bali has a number of well known shore diving sites, though I believe you are required to have a local guide. For instance, Tulamben has the Liberty wreck just off the shore. I did a week at Liberty Dive Resort. Others here will have much more experience to share.

There are many places to shore dive, but much depends on whether you can rent tanks or if local regulations allow you to dive without a local guide. Lots of the best dive locations are only accessible by boat or are marine parks, so you may not be able to get access without going through an operator.
