So far all I've done is shore diving. Problem is most is a little walk from the car so I bring a cheap duffel bag to carry my misc. gear After I gear up their is usually a couple of thing I'm not taking. save a dive kit, extra weighs things like that.
Now it isn't a problem when their is someone waiting on shore but what do you do with your bag while your down.
Last time I caught a couple of kids trying to walk off with it while I'll was kicking out. Luckly they left it and took off, but their was no way I was going to stop them. I burried a couple of things in the past. Maybe I should just leave it in the car next time.

Your best off locking everything in the car. I have a set of car keys on a D ring on my BC so I don't lock myself out. Never leave anything to the vultures, if you know what I mean.

If there's no one on shore to watch over the gear, leave all valuables in the car and carry the key with you. As far as the gear bag, if it's too far to walk from the car with all the gear on, I usually try to leave it out of sight, with minimal amount of things in it, typically just a towel, a water bottle, and a few nick-nacks. If someone does make with it - not too much is lost. Cash, watch, cell phone, etc. usually stay in the car. Also, if you take your key with you underwater, remember to rinse it well afterwards!

lock all valuables that I am not using in the cab, and start hiking. This is especially good for sandy Florida springs. This way, I only have to carry one tank at a time, and it's on my back where it should be. I have gone up to a 1/4 mile in full wetsuit and gear to get to an entrance.

Lock it in the car, keep a jug of fresh water (for rinsing you car key) under the car. Keep you car key on a shoestring around you neck. If you forget the shoe string, put it in your boot (on the bottom - not a great option if you have a long walk).

Being a former child clepto myself, anything that wasn't bolted down was good for the taking...especially if it was sitting out in the open. I would suggest locking what you don't take in your car. Carry a key with you, or hide one on the frame of your car, but do that before you leave for the dive site so no one sees you putting it on the car.

What happens to your key if it's one of the battery powered variety that opens your car remotely without the need to insert the key in the lock? Does immersion in water whether salt or fresh bugger it up?

Get one of those water proof baggies to hold it in.
