I am toying with the idea of doing Ship's Cove next Sunday [high 10:30ish?]. I have done some of it last summer in 6-8'viz. I want to see what it is like this time of year. Will anybody be up and about that wants to give me some pointers, be a buddy or dive same day/same ocean???

Conceivably, but I need to see how the week plays out for conditions and personal commitments. That is a nice time/tide for that site.

This weekend may have spoiled me for anything but above average topside conditions.

Is this the new March?

Pete

There is a very good chance I will be doing Ship's Cove on Sunday shortly after high tide. It's almost a 2 hour drive for me and I hate getting up real early on Sundays so I probably won't leave home until 7:30 or 8. I'll be doing it alone but anyone is welcome to come join up with me [so long as you know where you're going and have some experience w/the conditions there. If I play leader it'll just be mostly in the cove itself.] Pete - sometime this summer, after the gate opens up, you'll have to come down and I'll show you some good spots to do Fort Stark, New Castle [my favorite dive in NH.] Be sure and bring your camera...Joe

The conditions are looking pretty good: 2-4' seas, winds out of the S with some strong gusts, temps in the 40's. I am at the present time committing to go for high tide or a little thereafter. I don't know how the viz will be but so long as I can see my fins I will be happy. Much less than that isn't worth the trip but I know Portland quite well so I'll find something to do if that's what it comes down to. I got a couple tanks filled today so I am all set to go. Again I say - if anyone shows up you're willing to join me as a buddy or same day/same ocean situation. I'll be the short, fat, ugly guy w/ NH tags...Joe

:happywave:I got to Fort Williams about 9:15ish - high was to be at 10:15ish. Ocean was black. Normally I don't dive a black ocean but I had come too far. Went in about high. Tried going over to the right and along the edge sand/ledges. Viz was 8' - just a little off the tips of my fins. I got out to the end of the cove at 30' [the deepest I will go solo.] I tried going up into the ledges to do some sightseeing/beachcoming but I didn't like the surge conditions - very strong. The seas were 1-2' in the cove and 4' in the channel. There was a strong wind out of the S at the lighthouse but in the cove it was protected from the wind. From this area I went across the cove to the left side. Same conditions - very strong surge, poor viz [a lot of seaweed salad] so I tried going up and down along the ledges but inside the cove. It was fun. I used up a steel 100 - over an hour. By now my fingers were getting numb so I figured enough for now. I stayed in my suit and went to Nubble. The ocean was an odd shade of green [or was it my sunglasses - the sun was playing peek-a-boo.] There were no divers there and from the lack of water trails in the p-lot there hadn't been all day. It was very windy out of the south. The s cove was very rough but the n cove was great conditions. But it was well after mid-outgoing tide and looked very slippery on the vegetation. I hopped back into my vehicle and went to my favorite alternate site - Fort Stark. Again the ocean was black and the tide was well on it's way out. I went into the bay on the right. The viz was absolutely gross. It was half of what I had at Ship's Cove - I'd say 4 or 5' at the very most. I stayed in almost another hour but only to suck on air to keep my lungs tuned up for the summer season. It was not an enjoyable dive - it was almost like work. But like they say - a bad day diving beats a good day working around the house - or at least that's what I say!!!

Next weekend is looking like nice weather. However with all of the rain moving in I wouldn't count on much enjoyable ocean visibility near shore, especially rivers anytime soon.

When I was in Ship's Cove yesterday I saw a few young seaweed plants [2" high] sprouting up - the first new growth I have seen this year. The viz contained tiny particles of something very dense in the water. I've been studying the composition of the viz all winter and this is a little different from what I have been seeing. It was the same composition at Fort Stark and Ship's Cove. When does the algae bloom start up? It must be coming along pretty quick if it hasn't already started.
