We are traveling To Cozumel and want to have our own gear. Has anyone ever sent their gear in advance? We are on vacation for a week but only plan to dive one day. In the past we pack everything with us, but quite frankly its a pain, for just one day. Any great ideas for small group dives on Cozumel or Isla Mujeres?

With all due respect - and I mean this sincerely;
you're going to Cozumel for a week
you only plan to dive one day
carrying dive gear is a pain

Either you want to dive or you don't - but if you do go diving, enjoy the dive and don't start bitching about how hard it is to carry the gear or how crappy the rental equipment is....

Have fun diving and welcome to Scubaboard

Cheaper to rent the gear, and you don't take the chance of the gear not arriving before you need it. Or else dive a few more days.

Your "shipped" gear will get to Cozumel the day after your return flight home.

I'm sure some locals will respond, but based on what I have READ, shipping to Cozumel is a bit dicey, and likely cost prohibitive especially for one day of diving. For two divers that is at LEAST 50lbs of gear, and likely closer to 75lbs depending on what you choose to take on the plane. It is also very bulky which adds to the cost. You also have to pay shipping both directions, and there is a chance it won't be there when you want it, or at all.

You could pack the mask, fins, reg, and computer, and rent the rest. I can not think of anything I'd rather be doing in Coz vs. diving, but it's your vacation, so do what you want!

You can ship your gear FedEx but plan on spending more to ship it than your plane ticket.

I have had to ship items to Cozumel and FedEx works greats. Arrives on time and good delivery. The last thing I shipped was about a year ago. It was a 10 pound car part that fit in a small box. The part cost $85 at Auto Zone. Cost to ship FedEx was $85.

Two options. Take your gear and pay the extra $25 for a second bag each way or rent. Either way it's much easier and cheaper.

And if you ship you need to line up someone to take delivery and store your gear until you arrive.

Ill be there the 1st week of November with my local dive club. An extra bag in tow. I just got back from Aruba, it was easy enough & the extra bag is pretty cheap (cheaper than going over-weight on a single bag).

How many days you plan to use the gear really has nothing to do whether it makes sense to ship it.

And I think it's pretty rare it makes sense to ship gear. That it's a pain to carry or you might have to pay an extra baggage fee usually aren't good reasons, since shipping is probably at least as likely to give you a headache and cost more than an extra bag fee.

Now if you're only diving one day, and taking a lot more clothes or other stuff since you're not diving much, maybe it makes sense to rent. Personally I think it makes sense to dive more, but maybe you have a good reason like going with non-divers?

I just priced a 50 pound package (my dive gear) to Hong Kong from NYC: about $450 via Fedex. Not that expensive if you have exhausted your luggage allowance and quite a bit cheaper than a coach ticket. And it gets delivered right to your door. I had enough allowance to lug it myself, which I did, but if it had been a little cheaper I would have considered it just to save myself the hassle of lugging it between terminals at Heathrow along with my camera and other suitcase.

If I were diving one day in Cozumel I'd bring my mask, regulator, computer, and diveskin and rent the rest.

Shipping dive gear into mexico will be very expensive. 2 sets of gear via DHL or Fed Ex will run around $180.00 usd plus import tax and brokerage fees. I ship equipment into the country at least 4 times per month and having my importation license doesn´t seen to minimze my costs. The import tax or duties (even being part of NAFTA doesn´t seem to help) and 15% IVA that needs to be paid (yes Q Roo is tax free, but the goods are cleared in Merida) often means that I am paying around 50% of the value of the goods that I am importing.

For 1 day of diving either rent gear or pay the airline for the extra bag.
