I'm looking into purchasing a Sherwood Luna BC. I'm curious to know of people's experince with it. Likes vs. dislikes? Are the integrated weights secure so they don't feel like they won't fall out when diving, but still easy to ditch? Is it durable, comfortable, and easy to use?

Thanks,
Laura

I loved my Luna. Had no problems as far as anything breaking. I've had it 3 years with a little over 150 dives on it. The pockets were very secure. I miss having the shoulder dump. The back dump was super easy to reach and find. Has lots of places to clip stuff.

My only problem with it was on the surface and inflated it, it made it harder to breathe. My weight did fluctuate a little but, that never really made any difference. It was always a little difficult to breathe fully inflated. And that difficulty caused me to have to fight a slight panic a couple of times. In the best of conditions I would feel a bit of stress from that pressure on my chest/lungs.

It was perfect for me just starting out as I felt safer in a jacket style bc. But, as far as weighting went, I never felt like I could get completely horizontal. Close but, my feet always tilted a little down. Now that I'm using a backplate/wing, its truly amazing how flat and vertical I can get.

Whatever you decide to get, make sure you try before you buy. At least 2-3 dives.

And I would strongly urge you to try a back inflate bc as well as the jacket. And even consider bp/w. Doesn't mean that would be what is best for you but, see what is out there. A BCD isn't a cheap purchase.

Good luck!!

My first b/c was a Luna. I just replaced it after 6 years and 300 + dives. I love it and will keep it around as a spare. The trick to getting horizonal with the Luna is the amount of weight in the trim pockets. The inflator hose has a dump if you pull it down gently. If you over inflate it, you will get a squeeze that is very uncomfortable, but that is something you work out the more you dive. I would have gone back to the Luna if they had had one in stock when I was buying. I give the Luna two thumbs up for the type of diving I do.

My wife dives with a Luna and really likes it. I was going to try to get her to try a BP/W but at the moment she has no interest in moving away from the Luna...

The only person who can know if the Luna is a good BC for you is YOU. The "best" BC (IMO) is the one that fits you perfectly with the features you want....doesn't matter if its a jacket, back-inflate, or BP/W.

Do yourself a favor, try as many different types and styles as you can prior to purchasing. If you can't try them in the water, then at least spend some time in each one on land, moving your body in very different ways. It might look silly in the dive shop, but you'll want to know if the sizing and fit is correct, and whether or not the BC will shift or roll on your body. One important test is to put the BC on, put your hands up (stick 'em up style), and have someone pull UP from the shoulders. If it moves much, you're guaranteed to have that BC up around your ears on the surface, as well as side-to-side shifting underwater.
