After a 5-year break from diving, I’m getting ready to dive again soon. To prepare, I’m making sure all my equipment is in perfect working order and has been properly serviced.

In 2018, I bought a second-hand Shearwater Petrel 2, which I haven’t used since end 2019. I’ve always stored the dive computer carefully indoors in a cabinet, away from light and moisture . It seems to be working fine, and apart from replacing the battery and the battery compartment O-ring, I haven’t made any other adjustments.

Does anyone have experience with further servicing the Petrel 2, and is it considered necessary?

Welcome to SB.

There has been multiple OS upgrades in the last five years. I would suggest those be installed.

@Tom_DS Did you store it with the battery installed? Shearwater advises to remove the battery when you have it stored. I have bought 2 that needed repair because the original owner left the battery in and it leaked.

Per the manual, Shearwater recommends service every two years. That seems excessive to me. Dive-tronix, the US service center, recommends a general maintenance service every 3-4 years. I typically send my computers in every 4 years.

I would not send it in unless there is significant wear and tear. Buy a silicone "case" for it to keep it in good condition. Be sure to soak it well after every dive and trip. Use ONLY energizer lithium batteries and never alkaline.
