Sounds like quality has dropped since Private Equity got involved.
Well, when you steal the cash and take away the ability to deploy working capital on R&D; quality improvements; production improvements; and maintaining a capable, competent workforce while at the same time demanding ever-increasing sales at higher margins for a product that is stagnant or moving backwards ...

You probably have private equity ownership involved.

But the important thing remains that those sea bass turds are getting their bonus checks. See also the "steal the cash" point.

Thanks for this post. I just arrived in Cozumel for a week of diving. Did a 15 minute snorkle today with my dive computer to test my new prescription mask, and this evening in the room I noticed the dive computer has turned itself on and says I am at 218ft. I can't turn it off. I now am SOL for a dive computer. I just changed the battery before coming as it was dead. I suspect this is the second time this has happened. I will have to pull the battery to stop it from draining.

That's really bad luck with the timing :(

That does look like the depth sensor's failing. Alas it will need to be returned to a Shearwater service centre for repair.

They can turn these things around quickly but not within a few days.

Shearwater seems to be having a repeat of the issues that Suunto had with depth sensors a few years ago. By repairing or replacing them they are heading off a similar class action lawsuit to the one that resulted in Suunto’s recall.

The Suunto depth sensor issue was much more wide spread. So far there have only been a few issues with Shearwater.

If by few you mean reports on Scubaboard, you are correct. But I would consider that the tip of the iceberg given the proportion of Scubaboard members to divers in general, and the same for Shearwater owners.

I suppose the below experience must also be totally unrepresentative of the sensor quality issues SW are experiencing …. It’s not entirely their fault, the sensors work at the time they are installed … they just don’t last that long …

On the other hand, I bought a Shearwater Teric in 2019 and am currently on #8. I only paid for #1, Shearwater service has been superb.

Which reminds me of a point I made in another thread, the pandemic significantly reduced the supply of all electronic components and smaller manufacturers had to resort to lower quality components and suppliers as their previous suppliers prioritised bigger customers. This has impacted the quality and reliability of almost all consumer electronics products.

One of my firends just posted that his sensor in his Shearwater has failed for the third time. Seems to be fairly common unfortunately.
