Scuba diver, 35, dies in brutal shark attack in Mexico | Daily Mail Online
A 35-year-old scuba diver has died after a shark attacked him and bit off his entire left leg and part of his abdomen.

The shocking shark attack took place off the coast of Puerto Penasco, a city resort in the north-western Mexican state of Sonora on the Gulf of California.

According to local media, 35-year-old Nahum Verdugo Aguilera, who came from the state of Baja California, lost his life shortly after the attack.

Local police said that the incident happened at around 11am when the victim went out fishing with friends.

As soon as they realised he had been attacked, his companions took him ashore in the boat but the diver had already lost his life.

The police statement said: 'As soon as he went into the water, not even a minute passed before he was attacked and then seen floating on the surface.

'When they (colleagues) brought him on board the boat, they realised that he was missing a leg and part of his belly and rushed him to Puerto Penasco.

'Specialists arrived as well as the funeral company Santa Cecilia. The Ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigations has secured the boat, the Lidia Isabel.'

Following a preliminary investigation, official sources said: 'Witnesses said that the man was diving in an area called Hawey, 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) south-east of San Jorge Island, when the shark attacked him, biting off his left leg from the hip.'

The investigation continues.

Both articles mention he was fishing or after mollusks. I found the police report that suggests he was compressor diving (not scuba). Here's my translation:

"He jumped into the water and in less than a minute he surfaced, he (perhaps a fellow fisherman) saw the hose was cut. When he was pulled up they realized he was missing a leg and part of his lower belly, so they took him to Puerto Peñasco.
Police experts and Santa Cecilia funerary services arrived (met them at the Port?) and the boat Lidia Isabel was taken into custody by the Ministerial Agency of Criminal Investigation. "

Your late DD....your losing your touch :p

Locally, they are saying it was the propeller.
It's always interesting to read what's being said locally, but that would be unlikely with hose supplied air.

Huh?

I've never done surface supply diving. I'm trying to imagine how a shark takes out the hose and leg/abdomen. Are hoses routed down to the waist and back to the mouth?

A hard bite from a large shark at the lower torso would seem adequate to severe hose and abdomen, thereby also severing the leg.
