So I was talking to our dive instructor this morning here at CSUMB and apparently the MB Aquarium and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories have suspended their diving activities due to continuing shark sightings. Our school is about to follow suit. Apparently the same (presumably) shark was seen by divers around Hopkin's Reef a little while after the surfer was attacked in Marina... so I guess they think it's still in the area. Has anyone else heard about this? I haven't seen anything on the board so i wanted to check.

The shark that attcked the surfer has been pretty well established to be a juvenile white shark, probably 12-13 feet. Apparently the one at Hopkins was a little bit bigger. Seems like the educational and research institutions just want to keep themselves covered.

From what I understand, talking to one of the DSOs from teh aquarium, there haven't been any actual sightings by aquarium or hopkins personnel, just sightings of dead sea lions and such around the Hopkins reef area.

I'm sure glad our sharks down here in SoCal are laid back like the human population. I hope they stay that way! On occasion we see sharks take sea lions, or find floating carcasses of their prey. However, they don't seem to bother us divers... right?

Yes, they leave us alone, we don't taste very good with all that equipment.

i was a dive leader in austraila on shark diving trips . the sharks where very inquisitive . they would come up close and keep a watchful eye on you . never had a problem with them .

but while i was there ,up the coast their was a few shark attacks in the space of 3 weeks .

although they may not bother you they still have the potential to as it their space we enter .

daaaa nin . daaa nin . da nin da nin da nin . come on the sharks

Wow,

Very interesting to know about the suspension of dives. I will ask my diving instructor if we are going to be suspended because of said conditions.

I am getting certified this month and Sept 24,25 and 26th are my open water dives in Monterey Ca.

I'm a little concerned about the attack in Marina CA, I lived their for 3 years and nothing like that ever happened.

But I remember that beach being very secluded from lifeguards and only surfers would enter that turbulent water, very dark and trecherous water.

I myself use to boogie board full wetsuit and all in Orange County Huntington beach for years and never any scares.

Anyway thanks for the heads up and I will be checking with our diving instructor.

As long as there are surfers go ahead and dive! Just call them shark bait!
