Shark bites spear fisherman, Carmel, CA

We were up in Carmel when this occurred, so plenty of coverage on the local news there. They were spearfishing, it sounds like he had a speargun but didn't have any fish dripping blood wiggling around attached to him. If I was a shark, a snorkeler on the surface would look like food to me, which is why I'm much more comfortable under water than bobbing around on the surface

Monterey shark bite: Dad tells of horrific attack

Sounds like they were freediving; the victim had already shot three fish (but presumably did not have them on him at the time), saw the shark while submerged, surfaced to warn his father, then was hit from behind while waiting for his father to surface.
