In the SCUBA Diving industry, what does the terminology “ self certified” mean?
 
The only thing I can think of is for specialty instructors, when the training agency lets you do 20 experience dives in that specialty and then you fill out the proper paperwork and become an instructor for that specialty.

I haven't taught in so long I don;t even know if that's a thing any more, but it was when I became a MSDT.

It is. Also, distinctive specialties. In either case the agency reviews the applications prior to granting the cert.
