Dea, my experience is that you can't see much without a mask. Certainly I can't read my gauges, and I'm not sure I'd be able to find my mask if I had dropped it into coral or weed. I could probably manage if I'd dropped it on to a nice, plain, flat expanse of sand, but how likely is that?

I'm comfortable swimming about the pool without my mask (although it does make my eyes sore). In the sea, I've taken my mask off (voluntarily) to reposition it, but I found it difficult to judge how far I was from the coral. Don't think I'd try it again unless I was over sand. Of course, someday someone may kick it off, in which case I'll just have to deal.

If you want to practise, pick a spot where it won't matter what you kick!
