The captain told the relief captain not to leave port. The crew were in a Zodiac, dry and smoking cigarettes. They refused to do anything when people were trapped in the boat shouting for help. Every time there’s anything new . . . It makes it worse.

How are divers supposed to choose "reputable vendors"? With the exception of the Royal Evolution, objective criteria seem quite sparse. Who knows the alteration data for any of the boats? I went out on the RSA I in 2016, seemed like a great boat. It caught fire and sank, killing one, three and a half years later.

It seems quite clear that Egypt will not be looking out for your safety and will likely act to cover up any adverse events.

It's really about staying away & avoiding bad captains. If a boat is unsafe a good captain won't take it out. I always ask who the captain is when I signup or 3 days before. You've been on a ton of charters and we can usually tell before the boat even leaves the dock, who's a good captain and who's not. Things like a correct manifest, roll call at the dock, radio's turned on & volume up. safety briefing, life raft, muster drill and look for broken seats/hand grabs/steps. Yep we got bad captains in Florida too, but trip reports usually flush out a bad captain with a quick phone search.

I predict a sustained downturn in European business due to a lack of consumer confidence and I just don’t see the Egyptians fixing this under their own volition.

The adolescent tall tale about the rogue wave followed by no acknowledgment by the owner that it was simply a bold-faced lie rather illustrates what divers are up against - the willingness of LOB crews and owners to see what they can get away with. That fundamental lack of accountability permeates the general conduct of business. Obviously, Egyptian first responders aren’t any safety net, either.

I’ve been really wanting to get back to the Red Sea but I’m definitely skipping an Egyptian LOB as an option. Pictures of fried fish, bounce dives to 100m and repeated assertions about safety without any substantive examples just don’t pass the test.

Lots of other choices.

What is this about in the context of the thread please?

In regard to a reduction in European business, I really doubt that will be the case. @Scuba-74 and I were on the Tillis a few weeks after the Sea Story accident and of the divers who knew what happened no one was concerned. I suspect most divers are not on Scubaboard or any other forum. Of the people I dive with only 3-4 have ever heard of it.

I’m not correlating the downturn to ScubaBoard but rather the MAIB advisories. They’re essentially a demarche from the UK government.

Does anyone know when the part 2 and 3 of the dive magazine article be published?
