I realize everyone can react differently to medication, here is my experience with the scopolamine patch. I had never been seasick before but went on a 3-day deep sea fishing trip a few years ago and brought the patch 'just in case' as I we were planning to be out for the duration. As luck would have it, it was very rough when we went out. I was the last to get sick (and after one of the deckhands, which soothed my battered pride a little bit). I put on a patch and 90 minutes later life was very good. It was amazing how well it worked, even after not using it up front.

My side effects were a little bit of blue color shift in vision (very minor) but no blurriness at all, and increased thirst. Push the water when using the patch, it does dry you out a bit. One patch lasted the duration for me, but it was staying dry. I suspect you might have to replace it after a couple of dives, but that is a guess.

My wife had some vision issues with the patch as well, but none with the Bodine, so when we hit Playa in May, she is taking the pills since there do not seem to be that particular side effect.

I would also suggest the try it out plan.

An interesting note is that she didn't really notice the vision issue until day 3. Might want to have a backup even if it appears ok.

I haven't thought about the sea patch thing, but when I go to the sea, I prefer going there with a light stomach just drinking something awesome. :) But will try this when things go a little dizzy inside. :)

The first weekend he was prepared with Dramamine and those nubby wristbands and he said he could feel it a little bit but did not get sick.
Seasickness is probably as much a state of mind as anything else, so you probably shouldn't tell your husband that the sea-bands only work to the extent that he thinks they work, and maybe not even that much.

@Herk Man
Nowadays, if a person is observed to have dilated pupils outside of an eye exam, suspicions are raised regarding recreational drug abuse (MDMA/ecstasy, amphetamines, cocaine, LSD). Not sure if women would find that attractive. :D
Of course they do--you just have to choose the wrong women. :D

Seasickness is probably as much a state of mind as anything else,

Really ?

I will agree that state of mind can affect the severity of some of the effects of seasickness, its causes are physical and well documented.

Can't remember the name of it but we went deep sea fishing and a buddy of mine had the same thing they give to folks during chemo to help with the sick feeling. He has always suffered in the past but on this trip he did great and said he felt normal. Maybe someone will know the name of it.

ginger capsules work for many people, and they have NO side effects. :D

Always remember - stay in fresh air away from fumes, look at horizon if you feel motion as it will help the inner ear balance which is what causes the nausea anyhow. Also, keep busy - talk to other divers, setup gear, don't stand there thinking "I'm gonna get sick, I'm gonna get sick" --- you will get sick!!!

I don't get seasick anymore (did once and it was due to rocking boat, diesel fumes in my face for whole SI, and no shade on boat!). I tried the meds once, no way!! I felt unsafe. Yucky feeling, a bit stoned and bit hyper, alll at the same time - not good for scuba diving!! After that I got the ginger tablets, take 2 before getting on boat if the seas look rough, and no problemo! I don't use them anymore, but take a container on the boat to share if I see someone looking green. Ginger settles the stomach, but you still need to do all the other preventative methods!
