I don't often post to the forms but could not resist putting my 2 cents in on this.
Comming from that era (started diving in 1960) I have used both of these pieces of equipment, the marker on the right was used to ascend lines to the surface as a marker/reference line only, the one on the left served two purposes one as a marker and the other a floation device (1st BC) fastened around the waste via the webbing and detonated to give positive bouyancy to divers in distress (normally on the surface) but if accidentally activated at depth they sometimes caused uncontroled ascents, and because of the location of the leaver (when worn against the body) accidential detonate often occured without notice.
