The magazine that so many love to hate, Dive Training (Feb. 08) has a cover feature on Sea Hunt, Mike Nelson, and the media's love affair with diving.

"Quien es muy macho?

Mike Nelson es muy macho"

... and with those lines, SNL added him to the pop culture hall of fame.

Sorry but I love to love Dive Training and this article is one of the reasons why.

In case it came across wrong- I like the magazine a lot, as well.

But they did miss a great opportunity on the "inside cover". They always do a "reverse angle". Should have been a spread of us kids in the living room looking into the picture tube, all wide eyed.

The article about Sea Hunt had less than half the text actually about Sea Hunt.

The Today's Diver article is way off base.

Kinda figured that but didn't know how else to say what I wanted to. The reverse angle is one of my favorites also, sounds like a good idea for it but ya can't do them all.

Yeeaahh... Anyhow... about every 5 years it seems that they do an article about Mr Nelson.

What an incredible show that was... and I have only been able to watch to on DVD... I wish more of the current divers knew what a great show it was. I've decided to start teaching again, and I plan on showing a 5-minute clip in the beginning of my open water classes. It was even more fun to show entire episodes before the meetings of my dive club.

Over the last few years I have collected a large number of the episodes on DVD. Some are pretty cool, most are kinda hokey but all of them are still fun to watch.

I use the videos as entertainment at dive clubs when I'm invited to speak. Besides my usual ;) serious pontifications, I show them an episode.

When it's over, I give the members of the Clubs a quiz asking fairly silly questions such as names on the boats, how many sawtooth profiles did we see, how many times did Mike hoist himself up that ladder after tossing is flippers up ahead of himself, etc.

You can have a lot of fun with them.

Available on Amazon, have 128 (out of 155 ?) episodes for $120

Walter:
The article about Sea Hunt had less than half the text actually about Sea Hunt.

That, and the writer blew the old Mr.~Dr. conundrum for Nimoy's Spock.

..."You know, three-fifths of the world is covered by the sea, and how little most of us know about that underwater world. Go below with us again next week for another thrilling adventure in Sea Hunt."

..."Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue"

Thanks, Lloyd!

I had just bought the complete series on DVD (eBay) when the article came out.

My wife, who is too young to have seen the show on TV, just rolled her eyes.
