OK...I'm a new diver, and this is a flame free forum, so here goes. I have a brand new ScubaPro MK 25 with an S600 second stage. After the sting from purchasing that, I was looking for an inexpensive octo. I found a ScubaPro R190 on Ebay for $65, so I bought it. It was sold to me as new, and appears in perfect condition. I have not tried it out in the pool yet. OK, I was suckered in by a bargain price, now I am wondering, should I have it inspected before using it in open water even if it works fine in the pool? BTW, Scubapro doesn't even show the R190 on their website anymore. How old is this regulator?

Leisurepro has them for $85. It's a good regulator. Nothing fancy but adequate. I used one last year and it operated fine for me. As far as using a reg right out of the box, I've done that a couple times with no bad consequenses, although it's not recommended. The last two regs sets I've bought I went ahead and used the first and second stage with an octo that I knew was in good condition and took a pony bottle along just in case the first stage took a ****.

Don't lose sleep over it. Read this post and perform your own inspection:

#9 is a good check but it's for the first stage only, as is #2. Definitely do #11 - any debris there will point to a used regulator. With your reg there is a small plastic round pin on the edge that you need to remove with a tiny screwdriver or similar to be able to unscrew the cover... (you'll mar the plastic a bit if you aren't careful, if you care about such things)

I pulled my R190 octo right out of the box and took it diving, attached to a MK17 First stage and with a primary X650. The R190 is great, simple and low-tech so it should be less prone to failure. I actually like it more than my primary, due to the fact that my X650 will free-flow on the thought of it. The R190 is solid.

Peace,
Greg
